    American Exceptionalism

Do you believe in American exceptionalism?

American exceptionalism: an old idea and a new political battle

The proposition of American exceptionalism, which goes at least as far back as the writing of French aristocrat and historian Alexis de Tocqueville in the 1830s, asserts that this country has a unique character.

It is also rooted in religious belief. A recent survey by the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution found that 58 percent of Americans agreed with the statement: "God has granted America a special role in human history."

Gingrich says Obama fails to understand that "American exceptionalism refers directly to the grant of rights asserted in the Declaration of Independence," and that it is a term "which relates directly to our unique assertion of an unprecedented set of rights granted by God."

Nope. I'd leave it at that, but the minimum word count for a post is 10 characters.

Every country has a unique place in history and a unique character by definition, so mark me down as "idk i guess."

Gosh. I wonder how the responses to this poll are going to come down.

    Re: American Exceptionalism

Certainly not. While this is a common talking point among the far right, especially people like Rush Limbaugh, they act like just because someone is an American, they must be automatically exceptional. Exceptionalism only works if the people in question do things that are actually exceptional and today, I don't think that describes your average American, nor the nation as a whole. We've become complacent, we've become spoiled and some people, like the aforementioned Limbaugh, just sit around and pat everyone on the back for being wonderful when we've done nothing to deserve it.

We could be exceptional. We're just not right now. We need to earn it.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

    Re: American Exceptionalism

Yep -- I think we ARE exceptional.

We have a long history of taking in people from all over the world, and shaping them into a melting pot society that has led the world in innovation. Sure, we have our warts, and it is easy for resentful or unhappy people to focus on those warts, but the preoccupation with fault finding by the resentful can sure get tiring at times.

The US would still be exceptional without the special pieces of paper. Geography, immigrant culture etc.

Well, Gingrich is certainly full of sh!t, but I wish more liberals would be proud of the good things about this country. Just as it isn't difficult to find things to complain about, neither is it difficult to find lots of things that ARE exceptional.

One of my biggest complaints about the way the left has travelled the last few decades is that it fails to articulate a positive liberal vision for this country, as the anti-American Chomsky style reactionary voices drown out those by reasonable people.
