Re: Do You Understand Repression & After Effects of Slavery

I feel I understand the after effects of slavery, however I do not believe the consequences of slavery are still a factor in people's lives. If an African American is living in poverty, it isn't because of slavery pre-1860s.

This, in my humble apprehension, it to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution." óJohn Adams

No, I do not understand the "after effects" of slavery which still exist. Please explain them to me. As far as I know, there is no one alive who remembers from experience what slavery was like in the United States and who, therefore, still carries that "baggage."

The only effects that there are is what is in the mind of people with a chip on thier shoulder because they think that there should be. No one that experianced slavery before the end of the civil war is alive today.

As for the third option in your poll...get real.

I am familiar with repression. And can try to understand it too. For the people here that say 'give me a break'... how about if YOU were the VERY unwanted minority? And no one wanted to give YOU a job because of your skin color? PLUS the physical threats of violence..... the burning of crosses.... the needless killing and torture of people that were of your skin color....
I can also say that Ive not exactly been to innocent in this matter. Buuuuuuuut.... Ive had a large amount of reverse-racist **** happen to ME. ANyhow my Italian upbringing didnt exactly favor blacks.

When was the last time someone burned a cross in your yard?

More than just blacks have been denied a job based on the color of their skin to...of course not offically..that would be racial discrimination...but it has been done to other races also, including white folks.

I've been physically threatened (and not just threatened either) by just about every race at one point in my life, with the exception of those that are of the oriental persuasion.

When was the last time someone of your color (which I am assuming is black?) was tortured by someone in America? As far as needless killings go...that happens to every race by people from every race.

As for the "very unwanted minority"? Now I will say "give me a break". Racism only exists in the minds of those that are racist themselves.

I'd like for you to explain the after effects - as you call them.

Re: Do You Understand Repression & After Effects of Slavery

Obviously there is some stigma attached to being of the race that was formerly in slavery. The African-Americans were treated like second class citizens from 1860 to 1964, and later in some areas, Things keep getting better as the old guard dies off, yet repression still exists here and there in America.
