I feel I understand the after effects of slavery, however I do not believe the consequences of slavery are still a factor in people's lives. If an African American is living in poverty, it isn't because of slavery pre-1860s.

No, I do not understand the "after effects" of slavery which still exist. Please explain them to me. As far as I know, there is no one alive who remembers from experience what slavery was like in the United States and who, therefore, still carries that "baggage."

The only effects that there are is what is in the mind of people with a chip on thier shoulder because they think that there should be. No one that experianced slavery before the end of the civil war is alive today.

As for the third option in your poll...get real.

I am familiar with repression. And can try to understand it too. For the people here that say 'give me a break'... how about if YOU were the VERY unwanted minority? And no one wanted to give YOU a job because of your skin color? PLUS the physical threats of violence..... the burning of crosses.... the needless killing and torture of people that were of your skin color....
I can also say that Ive not exactly been to innocent in this matter. Buuuuuuuut.... Ive had a large amount of reverse-racist **** happen to ME. ANyhow my Italian upbringing didnt exactly favor blacks.

When was the last time someone burned a cross in your yard?

More than just blacks have been denied a job based on the color of their skin to...of course not offically..that would be racial discrimination...but it has been done to other races also, including white folks.

I've been physically threatened (and not just threatened either) by just about every race at one point in my life, with the exception of those that are of the oriental persuasion.

When was the last time someone of your color (which I am assuming is black?) was tortured by someone in America? As far as needless killings go...that happens to every race by people from every race.

As for the "very unwanted minority"? Now I will say "give me a break". Racism only exists in the minds of those that are racist themselves.

I'd like for you to explain the after effects - as you call them.

Obviously there is some stigma attached to being of the race that was formerly in slavery. The African-Americans were treated like second class citizens from 1860 to 1964, and later in some areas, Things keep getting better as the old guard dies off, yet repression still exists here and there in America.

Your Italian ancestors here in the U.S. were a very unwanted minority. Italian immigrants were, let's see, wops, guineas, dagos, greaseballs, goombahs. They were segregated, disliked, derided and ridiculed. Know what they did? They worked hard, learned our language, educated their children and went on.

The Chinese in the U.S. wre a very unwanted minority. Chinese immigrants were chinks, slopes, nips. During the Gold Rush, Chinese girls were brought over and sold into slavery. Know what they did? They worked hard, learned our language, educated their children and went on.

Every immigrant group since The Pilgrims has been an unwanted minority.

Far too many blacks in the United States today don't educate their children and don't even learn our language. They are held back by their own prejudices, the prejudices of their spokesmen, and the opression of our entitlement programs just as surely as they were by their masters before the Emancipation Proclaimation. And it's their own fault.

Slavery ended in 1865.Unless there is someone a 155 years old(someone who was ten years old at the time might remember being enslaved). The only people today who know what its like to be a slave or possibly feeling the after effects of it are people who were enslaved in another country, a someone forced into the sex trade, or forced to work in a sweat shop.

Yes. My ancestors were railroad slaves in Russia. Interestingly enough, my adopted son is a true African American (as in born in Africa, now an American) and his ancestors were not slaves.

Anyway, when I went to college, there were scholarships available for blacks, hispanics, pregnant women, women in general, black women, hispanic women, working mothers, black mothers, but no scholarships for plain white men like me. I'm guessing this really isn't what you were looking for when you did this poll.

Ok, what you were looking for. Yes, we have had to learn a lot about racism and bigotry having a multi-racial family. And unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there who love to put people in their categories and places in society based on stupid stuff like skin color. I've learned about "white privilege" and My hope for my son is that he dreams and does whatever he truly wants to and loves to do and is not put in his place, whether it be filling a quota at a college or middle management of a company, by government intervention. I already know he will have a better life here in America, I hope he can learn to appreciate this country and the opportunity that it provides every man and woman who is willing to go out and snatch up that opportunity.

I intend to teach him the things my family taught me: work hard because you can accomplish anything you truly work at. Never consider yourself above a job when you need one, or below a job that you truly want. Make good choices, and don't do things like drugs that keep you from making good choices. Get an education in something marketable. Then you can pursue any dream you want, but you will be able to provide for yourself and your family. If you love a girl, you'll wait until you can provide for her and you are married. Life isn't fair, that isn't your fault but it shouldn't be an excuse either. God has a purpose for you and wants the best for you if you let Him. Your parents will always love you and have a place for you if you need it, and nothing you can do will change that.

Blacks are still being repressed, mainly by democrats. It has little if anything to do with their ancestors being slaves.
Blacks need to be treated as equals, not led to believe they can't succeed on their own. The longer they think they are entitled to things because of the color of their skin, the longer they will be repressed.

Even if what you posted were true, it would still be wrong. The very nature of repression is that the repressed do not have a say in the matter. This is not a feature of the scenario you have concocted.

At one point I could understand repression. This is not the case anymore. If Affirmative Action did what it's supposed to do and not create tokens whose only skill they bring to the table is a diverse opinion, I could see an argument for it.

Go apply for any public sector job and state that you're an African-American female. You're hired before they schedule the interview.

Any repression that may have existed is gone, and is in a current state of reparation.

Repress is to hold back. I think Dems hold back minorities by treating them like they are less than equal, so are entitled to special treatment such as affirmative action. When is enough enough and we say white people have made all amends necessary? Until that happens, blacks will be held back and racial strife will continue.
To me a hopeful sign for the future was in the 2010 election. The republicans elected several minorities. When more blacks start voting for Republicans, the heavy thumb of the Democratic party will be removed.

But, the "old guard" never dies off.
We are still treated to people who live in the past centuries.
OSL for one.
The dictator of North Korea for another......if fact, everyone...., all of us... a shortcoming of man...
Fortuniately, most of us control this....more or less....

Your examples don't compare with the African American situation. Their populations were smaller and discrimination was less institutionalized -- it wasn't as severe and lasted for shorter periods of time. Immigrants also had the advantage of free choice and preparation, something imported African slaves did not enjoy. All these factors have impeded African American socio-economic development.

Erm yeah, no.
I have no idea what the effects are.

Do I think African Americans probably suffer still prejudice and racism? Yes, most likely more so than Black Brits but I wouldn't know from first hand experience

The correct definition is to hold back by force. There is no force here. I do think that the bill cosby point of view on the situation is correct though, so I think there is some holding back.

No need to be rude at my humor:)

See. Someone who "gets it".

Does the OP think slavery still exists? Ooh, how pseudo and twisted.

This racist post is a prime example of the after effects.
