Digsbe, pick up a history book. People just didn't start ****ing 200 years ago. They were doing it 1,000 years ago and 2,000 years ago and 3,000 years ago and 100,000 years ago. It's not like sexuality just became obvious to humans in the last 6,000 years. The only difference between 'our culture' and that of 1,500 years ago is that people didn't talk about ****ing as much as we do. They still did it just as much if not more.

I'm not talking about sexuality. I'm talking about sexual immorality in America and other westernized nations. Our society has morally degenerated in regards to sexual purity.

No. It has not because there's never really been a general consensus on 'sexual purity' to began with. Sexual purity has never existed for most people. During the first days of colonization, people in North America would be told that they were sinners who were going to go to hell and within the hour they'd be in the forest having metis children. Sexual purity has only existed in the minds of the highly religious. More specifically, highly religious males. Morality has been a way for males in highly religious societies to impose dominion over the females. Amazingly enough, this imposition of masculine morality has had very little results in most cases. In societies where less emphasis is put into following religious doctrine, sexuality has been but a mere afterthought for most people. The problem is that you think our society has degenerated when in reality it's always been that way. Why has it always been that way? Because most people have never really associated 'sexual purity', whatever that is, with who they are morally. It's really only been religious males, usually members of the clergy, seeking to dominate the other gender.

Seriously, abstinence only programs aren't failing because we as a society have listened less and less. It's because most people weren't listening to begin with.

Lust - It really depends on this one. If you're so lustful that you're willing to break the law then yeah it's bad. But if your just lusting after your spouse and them back at ya I don't see how it's a sin. After all, there's not a guy or gal in the world that isn't lustful at the time that they're horny.

Gluttony - Not even close to being a sin imo. I think that the uppity religious folks just threw this in so that they could have mules around to carry thier luggage....and do whatever they were too prideful to do themselves. After all, a healthy person can do alot more things than a fat person can.

Greed - This one would get my vote for being the worst. It has been the leading cause in 99.99999999999999999999999999999% for wars starting and for people stealing (both "honestly" and dishonestly).

Sloth - Seriously? Being dirty is a sin? Get real. Again this was probably put in there because uppity religious folks didn't want to smell the peasants.

Wrath - I still can't believe that they put this in as a deadly sin. How many times in the bible does it say that God was wrathful? Talking about being contradictory. (another reason that I believe that the bible was just written by man and God had no part in the making of it)

Envy - Envy is actually a lesser form of greed. The difference being that if you're envious you don't go out and break laws to get what you want. You normally keep it to yourself.

Pride - This would depend on what you're being prideful about. Is it a sin to have pride in your son/daughter getting an A on their math test? Is it a sin to have pride in doing a good job on a project? Of course not. When it does become sinful is when you think that you are better than everyone else and that you deserve everything that you want. So in this respect it is another aspect of greed.

So after this little analysis I would have to say that Greed is the #1 worst deadly sin.

Do you know that in the 1800s it was actually a common practice for communities and families to encourage young, unmarried women to have intimate relationships with other women in order to better prepare them for pleasing their future husbands? I did research on this in high school.

Our society is only as morally unpure as each person views it. You may think it is morally unpure, but I know that I consider many things that are being taught now about sex and relationships to be much better, both morally and health related, than much of what was taught or practiced in the past. I personally consider it a much better idea to teach young people about sex and safe sex, about how they can avoid pregnancies if they don't feel ready to have a child and how what is involved with having and raising children. I also think it is good that women now feel that they don't have to stay with a husband that beats or otherwise abuses them just because they said some wedding vows, and, along with this, that it is still rape if a wife is forced to have sex with her husband when she didn't want to.

I put sloth. At least you need to put some effort into all the rest of them.

Sloth is laziness...

Sloth is laziness...

Right...sorry I always think of dirty people when I think of sloth for some reason (of course if you're lazy then you probably don't wash right?). But in anycase my statement would still kind of stand right? I'll slightly modify it to really fit. :)

Sloth - I would imagine that the only reason that the uppity religious folks put this one in is because they didn't want to do the, shall we say... "less distasteful" jobs. After all...they have to spend all thier time talking to God and have no time to go out and dig in the dirt to plant crops right? I mean seriously...when was the last time you saw the pope doing anything but walking around waving at people and giving benedictions and praying? Has anyone seen ANY Pope so much as dump one bag of trash?

Without lust, no other sins would be possible.

ok, so now that we have determined that lust is the best of the sins, we are down to 6 remaining options for this multiple choice test :2razz:

Nothing that adorable could be a sin.

I was thinking the same thing regarding that girl I was hitting on at the bar earlier tonight

I'm going to throw out one no one has voted for. I think lust is the deadliest sin (literally if you think of STDs). In our culture we have turned a blind eye to lust and accept with no moral dilemma the fact that over 90% of people have unwed sex and very few are saving themselves for marriage. Sexual immorality has spread like a disease and become like a poison. It has been eating away at the fabric of what the family is and the institution of marriage. You are almost persecuted now for not having sex and ridiculed for having and adhering to sexually pure morals.

A certain amount of lust is needed to continue the species. Marriage is a man made institution and unnatural to the species.

greed combined with sloth is a killer.

I vote for sloth.

Sloth means the person is doing nothing to better his station nor that of anybody else. A leech on society.

I think a certain amount of greed is not only good but needed to advance a society.

If it wasn't for greed we wouldn't have many of the advancements that we have now.

It is hard to be greedy if you aren't willing to lift a finger to do anything for yourself or anyone else.

tell that to all those sponging off various entitlement programs who keep whining for more.

that is the worst kind of greed.

I can live with someone being greedy if they are willing to work for it.

I chose envy.
I guess because all day I keep perceiving it on this board.
It's a rather ugly trait.

You keep perceiving others' jealousy on this forum? Really?! I don't and I'm new.

Examples?

Pride.

Pride goes before the fall as they say. If you are too proud and overconfident, you will make mistakes leading to your defeat.

Dude - seriously? Sloth means laziness. Nothing to do with hygiene. For some, it should be.

Sloth. It prevents you from enjoying the other sins :)

C.S. Lewis said, "it is Pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began."

I tend to agree with him.
