Star Trek was the most influential. Buffy the Vampire slayer was the best written and best acted with many layers.

V had the best line ever (Michael Ironside just blew up a bunch of lizards and looks at a dead V and says

Damn waste of Fine Luggage)

Buffy is not Sci-Fi!

And Dr Who had the best lines ever. Don't make me start to quote.

In response to the critiques of the new BSG... I like the remake because the characters are real. They are people with flaws. They aren't perfect heroes like we would see in other series. Also, given the scenario, it makes more sense for it to be dark than chivalrous and comedic.

I know viewers and movie-goers are used to seeing perfect people on screen, but I was happy the re-envisioned BSG didn't go that route. It took characters who were the least likely candidates to be the saviours of humanity and went really deep with their psyches. I agree that it was too intense at times but television lacks that kind of honesty which was why I enjoyed it a lot. It had layers and wasn't one dimensional script writing.

The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. You might call it a spoof, but there are more Sci-Fi ideas in it than in the entire Battlestar Galactica oeuvre.

There were no perfect characters in the original BSG either, but at least they had positives and negatives. The crappy remake had no positives, it was a bunch of deeply flawed characters with nothing going for them. Each and every single one of them were sleaze and they kept reminding the audience over and over how awful they were. It wasn't honesty, it was exposing the worst of humanity and saying it doesn't get any better than this. There wasn't one single character that rose above it.

Besides, the ending has got to be the most idiotic in the history of television.

And it also, as I mentioned above, betrayed everything the show was supposed to be about.

Has anyone mentioned Lexx or Farscape yet?

Add "Resurrection Ship Pt II" And "The Hub" to that and you're good.

The Christian stuff was there from the very beginning -- you just didn't know they were playing for keeps til the last episode, which admittedly was a pretty big wtf for me as well. But from episode to episode 95% of the show was some of the finest story telling in television, second only to The Wire and Breaking Bad.

Season 3 was pretty boring -- and then they took the three most heroic, most human characters in the show, the three guys most responsible for their survival, and randomly made them Cylons. Moore even admitted later it hadn't even occurred to him to do so until near the end of the season, so their entire personal histories made no sense at all. Then to cover the blunder, they had to say "oh, yeah, Nicholas's REAL father is Costanza, whom we never even saw in the same room with Cally before."

There was never a "plan." There was never the slightest idea where the show was going, and it ended up doing almost everything it was never supposed to do. The only thing it didn't have was bug-eyed aliens.

The old BBC one, or the recent remake?

(I prefer the old BBC series myself, though the remake was okay.)

Well, you're a really cool frood, but do you know where your towel is?

A hoopy frood always knows where his towel is.

And what the best way to get a drink out of a Vogon is. ;)

The radio play was the best version of HHG.

I'd rather deal with this guy, than a Vogon...

But i'd REALLY rather deal with her...

Well, I haven't watched many of those shows, and some I've never even heard of...

I see that I have my eye-work cut out for me...

Time to watch some Sci-Fi!

On a more serious note, of the shows I have watched, Star Trek shows are near the top of the list, in the following order: TNG, DS9, Voyager, TOS (I just couldn't get into the older-style Sci-Fi), Enterprise.

SG and SG: A are up there as well, haven’t watched any of SG: U yet...

I liked it best in the original BBC radio series, but the TV series was great. The remade movie was good too, although I didn't like Simon Pegg too much. Not my idea of the lead.

Honorable mentions

Eureka
Sliders
Stargate SG1 & Universe
Enterprise
Lex
Firefly

My absolute favorite is a tie between Babylon 5 and Firefly.

I agree with the last - have not seen Eureka and LEX always wanted to make me swat the TV (do NOT show a space ship designed to look like a giant fly to an Aussie)

But honorable mention - even just for sheer cheeziness of sets has to be Blake's 7

With the all time stand out favourite comedy - Red Dwarf

Buffy's not a science fiction for crap's sake, it's a fantasy.
And I go with Sliders.

good stuff. you should check it out when you find some time. Much darker than the previous SG series.

You say that like it's a good thing.

Torchwood only ran for 2 seasons, but it was pretty awesome. Sexiest bisexual male lead in history, too.
