I know viewers and movie-goers are used to seeing perfect people on screen, but I was happy the re-envisioned BSG didn't go that route. It took characters who were the least likely candidates to be the saviours of humanity and went really deep with their psyches. I agree that it was too intense at times but television lacks that kind of honesty which was why I enjoyed it a lot. It had layers and wasn't one dimensional script writing.
There were no perfect characters in the original BSG either, but at least they had positives and negatives. The crappy remake had no positives, it was a bunch of deeply flawed characters with nothing going for them. Each and every single one of them were sleaze and they kept reminding the audience over and over how awful they were. It wasn't honesty, it was exposing the worst of humanity and saying it doesn't get any better than this. There wasn't one single character that rose above it.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

The Christian stuff was there from the very beginning -- you just didn't know they were playing for keeps til the last episode, which admittedly was a pretty big wtf for me as well. But from episode to episode 95% of the show was some of the finest story telling in television, second only to The Wire and Breaking Bad.
Season 3 was pretty boring -- and then they took the three most heroic, most human characters in the show, the three guys most responsible for their survival, and randomly made them Cylons. Moore even admitted later it hadn't even occurred to him to do so until near the end of the season, so their entire personal histories made no sense at all. Then to cover the blunder, they had to say "oh, yeah, Nicholas's REAL father is Costanza, whom we never even saw in the same room with Cally before."

There was never a "plan." There was never the slightest idea where the show was going, and it ended up doing almost everything it was never supposed to do. The only thing it didn't have was bug-eyed aliens.

The old BBC one, or the recent remake?

(I prefer the old BBC series myself, though the remake was okay.)
