    The Klingons, not so much.

And, the relentlessly capitalistic Ferengi are portrayed as villains quite often...

Star wars by a gigantic margin. Hell, even the prequel trilogy is better than star trek.

    There is that...

Ability to turn energy into any material object you wish (with some limitations, obviously, such as replicator size and energy requirements), and nearly unlimited energy sources...

Well we all know liberals can't understand heady science fiction.

    Neither. Mass Effect.

    Both between the two.

They both have checkered pasts. The new Star Trek film was phenomenal, but I'm looking forward to Star Wars: The Old Republic than the sequel.

I have to say that while I may have liked individual episodes of Star Trek more than some parts of some movies in the Star Wars series...

Overall, I preferred Star Wars over Star Trek.

Likely because of (at some level) what one person mentioned already - that Star Wars had elements of Fantasy mixed with Sci-Fi, as opposed to Star Trek's majority Sci-Fi focus.

And since I've enjoyed both Sci-Fi and Fantasy, in multiple media formats, and some combos of the two most of all...well yeah.

Anyone ever read a book entitled "Rise of the Fury" (I think that's it's title)?

It's a good combo of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, IMO.

    But who knows...

The reason why the Ferengi were portrayed as villians wasn't because they were capitalistic. During TNG, when Roddenberry was in control of production, he was set to make the Ferengi the big bads of the series, much like the Klingons were in TOS, and were initiatlly designed to be militaristic. Unfortunately, this was an epic fail. Their extreme capitalistic nature didn't really develop until DS9, when a Ferengi was a major cast member. With a Ferengi available in nearly every episode of a series, they had a chance to further develop the culture of the Ferengi, and decided to do it in a comedic way by making them aliens who worship capitalism to the extreme, which gave the Ferengi a way to develop into 3-dimensional characters instead of the run-of-the-mill baddie of the week they were at the start of TNG.
