If you ask me, a healthy dose of pride in your own country is fine. But it can easily go too far. When it becomes disconnected from values, but when patriotism becomes a mere competition of the display of rituals (waving the flag, instead of remembering what it stands for), it's a bad thing. Also, when pride in the own country derives into looking down on others, that's bad too, and that can easily happen.
Just my two cents as a German, not sure how much this applies to other counties. For us over here it's obvious how extreme nationalism can be perverted, considering our history. Just waving the flag doesn't make you a good patriot.
