Automatic or manual

Do you prefer manual or automatic?

agreed, its hard to operate a belt fed thirty I have mounted on the roof while trying to shift:mrgreen:

I always pictured you as a shot gun man. Or are you Travis Tomasie... that would be awsome.

Simpler is better for me, and furthermore, I wouldn't know how to drive a stick. I get the combo answer. Thanks disability :p

I like both.

I have a truck that's a manual for driving in the snow or off-road and I have a gas-efficient car that's an automatic for everyday driving.

Manuals may have the edge though, they can be much more fun to drive.

Personally, I would think driving off-road (like jeep roads) would be a complete pain in the ass with a manual, unless of course you have three feet.

I have to honestly ask how much difference a manual makes in slippery conditions too. I mean if you like a manual thats cool but I really don't think the edge is that great.

I have driven a manual only a few times so I can not comment on whether or not I would prefer manual over automatic. So right now manual just looks like some relic feature from the olden days.

I prefer a manual because it saves $1k or so on the cost of the vehicle.

Heel on the brake, toe on the gas.

well shotgun was the weapon I made all-american in and finished high in several olympic or world trials in. And I do keep a mossberg 500 in the closet for a SHTF moment but nothing keeps people from cutting you off like a Browning LMG

Stick is better IMHO. but these days you generally have to pay extra to get a manual tranny. both my current vehicles are auto but I do have an old '92 silverado, 5 speed stick, that my son and I are working to restore for him to drive next year when he turns 16.

I can drive both, but have an automatic right now

You have a better resale value with the automatic as more people can drive them, the traffic issue is not that important to me

Automatics tend to cost extra when you have cars that offer both (many US cars will generally come only with automatic)

In the future though the manual will dissappear to be replaced by the CVT or manumatics that are popping up in all cars even Ferrari (sp)

I used to love driving manual transmissions, but after suffering a knee injury it's painful to shift. I use automatics now because it's less stress on my knee.

Or it would, if you could actually mount one on your vehicle roof and drive with it without getting pulled over by multiple cops/other law enforcement persons inside an hour or two.

Depending on the population in the area you are driving in, of course.

I have an automatic.

I've rarely had a chance recently to drive stick, to the point I don't trust myself to do so without slightly wearing down a few gears or some such.

Personally (although this is probably a bad idea in some respects), I like the auto because it allows me to drive with both hands on the wheel at all times, or use one of my hands to do other things (adjust radio, drink coffee/beverage, or whatever), without greatly effecting my ability to drive. I also like cruise control for some of the same reasons (and cause' I’m lazy).

I don't think automatics really are any worse in snow/ice because they have the "1" and "2" low gears and ABS. If you've ever driven a car without ABS however you'll appreciate how down shifting can safely lower your speed without having to pump the brakes. With a manual, also, you can "force" a gear shift at higher speeds if necessary for better traction, and off-road its nice because you might need to shift through several low gears, or go into reverse, quickly. Comes down to more "operator control" I guess.

I also think their transmissions are easier to maintain/repair.

I have both and like my Nissan pathfinder (automatic) for long interstate trips but I have to go with my old Jeep Renegade (manual) for pulling my boat in and out of the launch. It's for sale BTW if there are any takers

It's all in learning to drive and control it properly. Trust me, with 500hp at the rear wheels, anything, including dry roads is a "slippery condition."

I can operate a manual with about the stiffest racing clutch you've ever seen quite proficiently, but had to settle down when I became a family man. Now I just putter around in an automatic Chevy Cavalier. There is just something about a manual though that makes you feel so much more in-tune with the car and is just a blast to drive.

*Sigh* Now I miss my toys. Someday... maybe when the kids are gone... I'll get another one.

Manual any day of the week. Better control, less maintenance, cheaper to buy ... why wouldn't you want one?

I think any man who can't operate a manual transmission should have his man card revoked. Automatic transmissions are for women and cripples.

Knowing how to drive MT is one of those necessary survival skills - imagine dying of exposure in the desert because you could not drive the otherwise perfectly serviceable jeep you were found in.

How embarrassing, not being able to drive a girl car. :2razz:
No kidding. A Nissan 350ZX? If you're gonna jack something, at least jack a nicer vehicle than that ...

In high school driver's training, I drove a few times with a manual tranny, but I sucked so bad, they gave me automatics from then on. Much later, living on Knob Hill in San Francisco, I really learned how to drive a stick. I learned FAST, too, lemme tell you. :lamo

A few years later, I bought my own manual transmission car and loved driving it until it died a sad and pathetic death on the 10 in LA.

These days, I'm driving a big ol' Silverado auto with 4WD and ABS. LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!
