How the hell do we be build a jungle on the US - Canadian border, let alone the near-desert (in some areas) US - Mexico border?

Seeds + water = jungle.

And besides, don't animals with rabies die after a short while, from the rabies? I sense an impending decline in the koala population…

Design a non killing version of rabies, trust me it's a great idea.

For that matter, where do we get a T1000?

Time machine.

The moat with shark-mounted lasers might be possible, but it would still take a hell of a lot of water, and I understand they may have this water shortage issue in the southwest.

We can use a water pump.

Still though, if we had all that, the auto citizenship plus trophy might be in order.

Don't stop believing. :2razz:

This will not work so why bother? They still come in:(

So, I was perusing one of the recent threads on Immigration, and these questions occurred to me:

Can a case be made for construction of walls/fences/barriers on some or all of the land borders (and perhaps some sea borders? Dunno how that would work...) of the US?

If you support such, why?

If you oppose such, Why?

And, whether you support or oppose such, are there variables involved that might convince you to switch?

And other questions in that vein.

I use to be against it
Then I was 100% for it.
Now I'm in the middle.

Per fencing our border - I think yes, we need to define our border, maintain it, monitor it, and become more concerned with *who's* getting in - and why (it's not all just some guys wanting to pick berries - as many would like us to believe).

so everything concerning our border-security needs to be reformed: our attitudes about it, the government's lack of give-a-damn, everyone's openness at the border - all this stuff needs a change.

With how things are progressively *getting worse* along the entire border we're developing new and more serious problems beyond immigration concerns. And just twiddling our thumbs and doing nothing will simply permit it to escalate - you can't just ignore it like that, it won't go away.

If 3 punky little adults could just "wander" into Iran atop a mountain on accident and be detained for over a year I think we can do a better job of somewhat giving a damn about ours.

I am pretty liberal on allowing people into the country, however there are always going to be people who we do not want crossing the border that will not be interested in passing through customs. As such I see plenty of reason for building a fence. Why make it easy for criminals to go back and forth?

It will be an epic failure/distraction and a waste of our money.
An unseen problem is the wall/fence will be built under the premise of keeping people out but, in reality it will be keeping us in.
We need real immigration reform, like making it easier for peaceful people to enter the country legally and eliminating the welfare state for illegal immigrants.

Fugly.

Does anyone here live on the border? How would you like to have your view of the Rio Grand turn into a blight?

Most of the airplanes that I've seen will go over all of the walls that I've ever seen. Even the really ugly ones.

Well - when it comes to protecting and building countries I'd rather, if they waste billions every year, that it *at least* be put to *our* country.

If they wanted to put millions into water filtration systems, slaughter houses and prisons we SURELY could have applied that money to the US instead of Iraq and other areas which didn't really want them to begin with.

What screwed up psychology is that: help protect and rebuild a foreign country but when we have *those same* problems in the US it doesn't matter.

I vote yea, because our country should not simply be wide open for whoever to walk-in at will. I believe that the borders need to be secure and only desirable immigrants allowed into the nation.

If that were the case, only attractive females would be able to enter on my watch.

****, more water? Besides, I don't think it's that easy.

Is that even possible?

Time machine.
Actually, we probably would need an alternate reality / time machine, since I think that was a character in a movie, and thus does not and never has existed in this reality.
But if you have a time machine, by all means let me know, I need to go back in time and tell myself not to do some things - And to do some other things. Whereupon, I will cease to exist as I know me. Depending on which theory of time travel I believe... At the time in question, that is.

We can use a water pump.
Hmm. Somehow, that sounds a tad too simple.

I'll get back to you on that.

@ Aunt Spiker
America’s infrastructure could surely use it.

Exactly!

We're really struggling through a mass of problems - but we continue to pump into other countries - we're going into *massive spending deficits* to cover the costs of continuing our campaigns in other areas.

When do we start to matter to our government?

Yes, but only if machine gun nests are added as well.

As someone who supports going to Fortress America I support building fences along both borders.

This, very few people talk about killing the welfare state when it comes to immigration.

I live on the Canadian border. I wouldn't mind one bit.

Yes, I support it.

I primarily support it on the southern border. Over 80% of our illegal immigrants hail from lands south of our border, not north. The countries in economic problems to the point that many of their citizens try to illegally immigrate are to the south, not to the north. You spend a good bit of savings to fix a toilet that's flooding your house and causing massive damage to the structure. You don't spend a good bit of savings to fix an occasionally drippy faucet that adds $.79 to your monthly water bill.

You begin it in conjunction with heavier enforcement of immigration laws and deportations, and once its part way through you start dealing with the notion of reformed immigration laws and what to do with those inside our country.

I would be fully in favor of figuring out a plan to allow illegals without other crimes to come forward and admit their illegality, go on a seeming "probation" type status, and work on the wall for a reduced salary and amnesty for their crime and potentially for IMMEDIATELY Family. I'd be in favored of forced labor working on the wall for those that are CAUGHT here illegally, with them serving their sentence doing hard labor building it. (I have a more detailed plan on this elsewhere).

I would be in favor of likely a two wall solution, with space in between and slanted at the top of each to make climbing the direction to the U.S. more difficult.

I don't think a wall is THE answer, or the only answer, but I do think it would help.

Nay. There are a lot of much better ways to keep illegals out of the country. Building a wall or fence would just be a waste of money.

I think it would depend, at least in part, on the specifics of the barrier in question.

But yeah, quite likely to cost money.

Yes, there should be a wall/fence on the US-Mexico border.
It should be well-guarded and vigorously patrolled.

I was reminded what an old debate this all is the other day when I watched this movie.

We will never matter to our government, sadly. We got to stop playing the game but, that’s for another post.

@ chevydriver1123
Well, it’s an important part of the problem and needs to be addressed.
