Worst American Presidents

Worst American President

  • Total voters
    83
Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lydon Johnson. All were horrendous presidents, though I think Wilson takes the cake for nearly making this country truly fascist.

You forgot Jimmy Carter, who, next to Obama is undoubtedly the worst American President. Obama holds the crown right now.

Ha,ha! That would only be on a poll within the Tea Party - in reality, George Bush is still the worst, the fact Teabaggers won't admit it is because they are blind to all the screw ups and they've drunk too much Kool Aid.

I can't believe how intelligent people can be so thoroughly brainwashed by what they read from nut-cases. Disagreeing with Obama's policies is one thing, and expected, but complete condemnation is either sick, crazy or prejudiced.

Of course, the poll could be a cleverly contrived trick just for laughs. If so, I apologize.

I think the operative word in your statement is "intelligent" - so that would explain the reason.

So far all I've read is knee jerk reaction. Let me know the next time you say something intelligent and I'll rate it 1 through 10.

I have, but obviously you weren't able to recognize it, much less rate it.

Moderator's Warning:
Both of you stop, now.

Of course, I have no domestic perspective to bring to this debate, but I've always had a particularly sceptical attitude towards Truman. Three reasons:
  1. Hiroshima/Nagasaki.
  2. McCarthyism.
  3. Korea.
Of course each is a complex issue with arguments and explanations, but to my mind all three point to a President either malevolent or ineffectual. Perhaps both.

JFK always struck me as horribly over-hyped too. Did he actually achieve anything? Anything at all?

1. It was complicated, but no matter how one looks at it (and there were several ways), it was a serious alternative towards what was possibly coming next.
2. Again, complicated. Democrats simply could not control the message. No matter how it went, Democrats were unable to appear sufficiently anti-communist to the public.
3. As you said, complicated.

I couldn't quite agree with you there, but you chose your man.

As far as JFK goes, there were a few important things: education, NASA, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The last one, especially, deserves respect. It was one hell of a mess for both Khrushchev and Kennedy. To this day, political science and public administrators look at what happened those days to show the competence of that administration during the ultimate test.

And again, I would automatically dismiss anyone who uses either George W. Bush or Obama.

A situation largely created by his miscalculation in launching the Bay of Pigs invasion, no?

History will judge both differently to how they are currently being judged. I suspect one worse, one better but you're right, it's sloppy, partisan nonsense to ignore the real clunkers in favour of flavour of the month hate figure.

Unbelievable.

Bush couldn't put a coherent sentence together.
Bush didn't know the difference between tactics and strategy.

Bush made the most telling statements of any president, and yet the middle-class Republicans weren't able to pick up that they were just his pawns.

Bush lied and got us into an unnecessary war, over 4000 Americans were killed and as many wounded.
Anyone who thinks Bush wasn't the worst president is just in denial.

Apparently you do not realize that the clip you posted was from a fundraiser for a charity where the premise was political figures would make jokes about themselves. Guess who else was in attendence? Al Gore.

As for the intelligence of Bush, last I checked he got through Yale/Harvard not to mention getting through rigorous training learning to fly a fighter jet. Estimates based off his SAT and flight school scores place his IQ somewhere around 125-130. Hardly a moron by any stretch.

Not really. It was more of a counter towards our strategic presence in Turkey. To the Soviets, this was entirely defensive (actually, the word defensive is something that would continue to make negotiations complicated, simply because for the Soviets-or Russians to be specific-they were incredibly wary of anything, thus considered almost everything defensive whereas the US considered many of the moves offensive) and the United States considered the move unwarranted and incredibly dangerous.

Yes, and Gore is wealthy, also, although not part of his base. The point being that Bush's base are the "have-mores" - not the run of the mill, middle-income Republican.

We know that he didn't graduate with honors like Obama, and besides, going to Yale (which I'm sure if he had been a regular person, with his grades, he probably wouldn't have been accepted) doesn't mean you are going to be a great President.

Bush had trouble expressing himself, couldn't always put a coherent sentence together, and had to have a phonics teleprompter. And, Reps/cons have the audacity to criticize Obama for using a teleprompter?

Here is a better evaluation of Bush taking other things into consideration.

According to statements in the report, there have been twelve presidents over the past 50 years, from F. D. Roosevelt to G. W. Bush who were all rated based on scholarly achievements, writings that they alone produced without aid of staff, their ability to speak with clarity, and several other psychological factors which were then scored in the Swanson/Crain system of intelligence ranking.

The study determined the following IQs of each president as accurate to within five percentage points:
147 Franklin D. Roosevelt (D)
132 Harry Truman (D)
122 Dwight D. Eisenhower (r)
174 John F. Kennedy (D)
126 Lyndon B. Johnson (D)
155 Richard M. Nixon (r)
121 Gerald Ford (r)
175 James E. Carter (D)
105 Ronald Reagan (r)
098 George HW Bush (r)
182 William J. Clinton (D)
091 George W. Bush (r)

The six Republican presidents of the past 50 years had an average IQ of 115.5, with President Nixon having the highest IQ, at 155. President G. W. Bush was rated the lowest of all the Republicans with an IQ of 91. The six Democrat presidents had IQs with an average of 156, with President Clinton having the highest IQ, at 182. President Lyndon B. Johnson was rated the lowest of all the Democrats with an IQ of 126.

An end to major combat operations is just, the rest of the years have been devoted to rebuilding infrastructure and keeping the pressure on the insurgents. For all intents and purposes major combat operations were at an end.

The crew of the ship put that banner up by the way, not Bush or his administration.

Though the poster took the comment out of context, she was using it to make her point...which I disagree with, but nevertheless, she was just using it to further simple-minded distaste of a leader.

IQ testing is FAR more complicated than how those in the article described each President's IQ was assessed. I see zero validity in what they are stating.

His base of donators, yes. His base politically, absolutely not. It would take extreme filters to forget the power of his "every day man" image, regardless of the fact that he was a member of a prestigious family. His social conservatism and religious values struck a chord with the voting public.

OMG-you didn't research that before posting it

it has widely been debunked as a hoax and only a complete fool would see that as an accurate link

BUsh one was a Phi Beta Kappa at Yale, he had the strongest college academic record of ANY president in the last 100 years

you lose

I didn't even have to research it to know it was an idiotic assessment. I've read scores of IQ tests, and have sat with IQ testers. No way it could be determined in the way the article stated. Stupid anti-Republican hack report is all it amounted to.

CC-you haven't seen that hoax nonsense before. "The Lovenstein Institute" was the supposed source of that. Snopes and other sites have destroyed that garbage. posting it as a credible link should permanently brand Mertex as someone who is either gullible or doesn't think anyone else here has a brain

I'm fine with gullible, personally. Suitable label.
