Simple question, yes or no, and explain your answer.

Personally I think we should, it doesn't provide our kids with a proper sex education, and doesn't prepare them for the real world. I also think that sex education should include information on LGBT issues, and I think that our schools should offer condoms to our students with no questions asked.

I was staring at the question intently before finally realizing you was talking about US. I'm very slow today :doh

Abstinence hasn't been taught in UK sex education classes for a while. My own sex ed was more about love in primary, then pregnancy and then in secondary when I was a teen. Safe sex and diseases

Yes. There isn't much reason to keep knowledge on safe sex away from teenagers and preteens. And it is quite obvious that there are some parents who either don't feel comfortable talking about it, don't know much about it, or simply don't care. Knowledge doesn't lead to teen pregnancy, lack of knowledge and hormones do.

Also, with a huge majority of teens having access to the internet, they are now exposed to even more people who could give them STDs, especially older partners. Before the internet, teenagers needed some sort of connection, such as an older sibling/relative, or be determined to go out of their way to meet up with older guys/girls. Now, it just takes a chat room or social networking site from home to make such a hook-up.

I think we should let individual school districts and states decide how they want to handle these issues.

I think we should get back to basics and force parents to actually parent their ****ing kids instead of expecting the school system to do it for them.

That's why johnny can't read. the school is too busy trying to teach him all the **** his parents are supposed to that there is no time to teach him how to read, write, do basic math, etc.

I absolutely agree with you 100%. Instead of abstinence, I think schools should concentrate on the REAL world. Yeah, abstinence is one choice. And it deserves some attention. But not even as much attention as contraceptives, lifestyle choices. I just looked up some abortions stats on another thread. It's convinced me that we're not doing ENUF education.

Example: The pill allows for a .3% -- yes, point-three-percent, chance of pregnancy. Yet women who abort report an 8% failure rate. Due completely to being either careless or misinformed. This is soooo easy to fix. Condoms. Failure rate with perfect use is 2% as opposed to 15% for typical users. Link on other thread. Teach kids how to USE the birth control they HAVE. How to use the morning-after pill. Make it easily available. In high school/college, put vending machines in bathrooms, for God's sake. Make it cheap. Walk them through the life-changing circumstances that being a young mother has in store for them. Teach them that abortion is a last ditch solution. Get them thinking.

I think parents should discuss this issue with their kids, but I think this issue is too important to leave to the parents. We should have people knowledgeable in the field to give our kids accurate information, and teach them how to properly use birth control.

I'm so tired of these state's rights people.

If some backward enclave wants to teach that babies come from Mr. Stork, I'd be happy to let them leave the Union so non-idiots can bring about proper education for their citizens.

FWIW, I don't think the reason that the failure rate of contraceptives is so high is because people haven't been taught how to use them properly, it's because people tend to make mistakes or forget about things. If a girl forgets to take her pill one night, it's not because she had abstinence-only education as a child, it's because she forgot to take her pill one night. If a guy stumbling back from a bar drunkenly puts a condom on wrong, it's not because he didn't get a sex talk in 6th grade, it's because drunk people **** up condoms from time to time.

I would wager that if there were a study that looked at the effectiveness of contraceptives among those who had had comprehensive sex ed in middle school, you'd still see substantial error rates.

So you're saying that instead of letting MA choose to recognize gay marriage, letting CA offer medicinal marijuana, and letting NY have strict gun laws, we should force all those states to abide by the national consensus on each of those issues?

[Insert some childish quip about how everyone who disagrees with me should leave America.]

I am so tired of these "the govt should do everything for us" people. Good God, whatever happened to personal responsibility? Why do so damn many people today expect the govt to take care of every-****ing-thing for them? And then we wonder why taxes and the deficit are sky high.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Numbers tend to dilute stupidity, even if they dilute intelligence as well.

well **** me...why not just turn over raising kids to the govt completely? who gets to decide which issues are too important to leave to the parents? let's just do away with parenting altogether. we have the technology. all conceptions can be invitro, all "mothers" can be paid surrogates and then the kids can be raised in govt run institutions where a wide range of "experts" can teach them all they ****ing need to know.

I'm sure we live in a nation where every parent has the time and qualifications to educate children.

Yep, totally sure.

Maybe we should entirely privatize education? How about policemen? That way people can use the second amendment and make personal safety their business instead of the taxpayers.

Then I would suggest that you move to a country that has a more centralized government.

(see how that works?)

No, but thanks for your offer. I'll simply continue to advocate central authority in most public matters.

how much time and qualification does it take to teach a kid about sex and birth control? It's not rocket science for pete's sake.

Maybe if you said more words to your kid than "mommy be back" they might know something: Chris Rock

Yeah, God forbid we actually let the education system educate our children.

Should we move away from Abstinence Only? Yes we should, definitely. However, I don't mind Abstinence Plus curriculum.

It is if you're a product of Alabaman sex ed.

It's a joke to call 80% of what goes on there these days "education"

Johnny can't ****ing read but he knows how to put a condom on a ****ing banana
Susie can't multiply two 2 digit numbers but she knows that homosexuality is a viable alternative lifestyle

whatever happened to reading, writing, arithmetic? If peole are so ****ing stupid that they can't be trusted to teach their kids anything, then they are too ****ing stupid to be having kids. forced sterilization for the stupid!!!!!!

Maybe if we raised those sky high taxes, we could afford good schools.

Actually they can't do neither, because of abstinence only education. :2razz:
