I was going to say that - in so many words.
Now, I think we should take the positive route, this may be more beneficial.

Public employee unions are the worst. There is no way to tell for them when people are just being paid too much. For private companies, you have more of an incentive to resist union demands because you only survive off of the wealth you create. Public employee unions just suck away from taxpayers. We waste so much money because of them and their pension plans. The Davis-Bacon Act which is little known is also tremendous source of waste as it mandates that federal public-works projects pay their employees prevailing union wages.

Entitlement programs are also a tremdous waste of money. Do you realize that social welfare spending in this country represents 35% of GDP (21% of GDP is purely public). Social Security is the largest government program in the world!

Government corruption is also a huge threat as we just wasted billions bailing out those corporations that helped instigate this recession that we still going through. A great moral hazard.

We're spending a ton of money on wars and a military that is very inefficient. I'm not saying we should abandon the army, but there is just a ton of waste in that system.

I don't need to say much about the federal reserve since I've expanded on that many times.

Frankly, the 2-party system is an inevitable outcome of our voting system. Just look at Arrow's Impossibility Theorem.

And finally, can we get rid of the income tax? It is the source of all of these problems (except the federal reserve). Without it, the government wouldn't have the money to waste (at least the federal government wouldn't have that money).

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false, and does not swear deceitfully. Psalm 24

AFSCME and SEIU are pretty much the scum of the earth when it comes to unions. Even the pro labor professors I had said the same thing

The one event or thing that caused America the most damage was the New Deal and the jurisprudence spawned by FDR's lap dog courts

I love those that voted religion has damaged this country the most. I means it's only the main reason the first settlers came here.

War, because it spawns and sustains all the other evils.

Seriously, each individual's pursuit of their own self-interests and the general unwillingness to sacrifice our own time, money, or energy for the good of others, particularly our own children.

War is an effect, not a cause.

"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

    ~James Madison

First and foremost- the citizens of the country are responsible at all levels for the problems we face.

Second- the greatest downfall has been the collapse of our industrial base and both parties, labor unions, management, and citizens have all been willing participants.
