You know, the more I read the thread's subject line, the more irritated I become. I appreciate the satiric attempt (at least, I hope that's what the intent was, LOL), but I really can't get beyond the Should _____ be banned from _____ element.

With the exception of pedophiles, why should anybody be discussing whether x-group should be banned from x-place?

That was the point of the thread actually. It came about when a lot of people wanted mosques banned from a certain radius around ground zero.

It's a shame when people you don't like have the same freedoms as you isn't it.

I wonder what Salman Hamdani would say.

Mohammad Salman Hamdani (December 28, 1977 – September 11, 2001) was a Muslim American who died at the World Trade Center in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Hamdani was born in Karachi, Pakistan and moved to America with his parents when he was only 13 months old. It was believed that on the morning of September 11, 2001, while on the way to work at Rockefeller University, Hamdani witnessed the smoke coming from the Twin Towers and hurried to the scene to aid victims, using his police and EMT identification to get a ride through the restricted traffic. He died in the World Trade Center and his remains were found in the rubble of the North Tower.

At first Hamdani was listed as missing and there were media reports that he was under investigation as being possibly involved in the attack. In October 2001 an unidentified body along with Hamdani's medical bag and identification were found at Ground Zero, the site of the destroyed World Trade Center. His body was not yet positively identified by DNA profiling. He was declared a hero by Congress that October, 45 days after the attacks. Specifically, he is mentioned in the USA PATRIOT Act, Title 1 in section 102 (titled "Sense of Congress condemning discrimination against Arab and Muslim Americans"), which states that:

Many Arab Americans and Muslim Americans have acted heroically during the attacks on the United States, including Mohammed Salman Hamdani, a 23-year-old New Yorker of Pakistani descent, who is believed to have gone to the World Trade Center to offer rescue assistance and is now missing.

Months later in March 2002, his remains were identified and shortly afterwards on April 5, 2002 at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, he was memorialized as a hero by Mayor Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Kelly, Congressman Ackerman and 500 others. A memorial scholarship fund in his name, for outstanding Pakistani-American students, was created at Rockefeller University in 2002 by his mother Talat Hamdani. The 2002 film 11'9"01 September 11 has an 11 minute segment India that is a docu-drama based on Mohammed Salman Hamdani and his family.

On March 10, 2011, Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, in his testimony before the House of Representatives’ Committee on Homeland Security for its hearing on “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and That Community’s Response”, cited Mr. Hamdani as being falsely accused of being involved in the WTC attacks only because he was a Muslim.

You should have been at ground zero and watched them pulling out all the bodies of people that were guilty of just going to work...but then to many with distorted thinking that wouldnt matter...and of course theres some that wont acknowledge that the site for the mosque was chosen specifically to rub salt in all the open wounds and to be a FU all to americans...but of course I understand there are some that are unable to voice those thoughts as it doesnt fit in with their agenda and they want to harp on religious freedom and use the catholic church as an example ...RELIGION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GROUND ZERO MOSQUE

Thats because moderate muslims fully realize that the mosque was put there ONLY as an affront to everyone that died on 911 and from the aftermath and as a FU to all of america...and had zero to do with religion or religious freedom that was used as whore for an excuse to put their monument there hailing the killers...

Actually, Spud, I was not around here when this debate was really raging. It was always my understanding that everyone believed the Imam (I forget his name) had every right to build his mosque, just the same way that pastor in Florida had the right to burn Qurans. The question had more to do with whether it was the right or sensitive thing to do.

If they bought the land legally, who cares where they build their churches.
