Why is a second thread on this being started when one already exists with a full discussion happening?

Ohhh... I apologize Gabriel. I misread the title. This thread is talking about corporate welfare. Didn't catch that.

What do you mean by unamerican?

Subsidizing the oil industry for example.. Clearly these are the most profitable companies on the planet .. why does the public have to give them even more money on top of all the profit they make by selling things they paid less for to the public? Or not paying for pollution like most everyone else does.

I don't agree with corporate welfare because the level it has arrived at mostly involves placing the burden of risk on the public even though the corporation can turn around and make private profits thanks to that money. Social welfare is different because it is the public paying and the public benefitting. Corporate welfare also has less accountability, but that's what happens when corporate executives either have seats in government or they are directly lobbying government with huge sums of money.

    Re: Is Corperate Welfare Un-American?

If corporate welfare means bailing out a failing business-hard to say. Chrysler was bailed out and what that meant was the workers didn't go on unemployment, the related businesses (such as a diner near the Chrysler factor) didn't go bankrupt etc. If corporate "welfare" means say the City of Cincinnati agrees to tax breaks so that Proctor and Gamble keeps its HQ in Cincinnati rather than moving it and 10,000 jobs to Atlanta, that is clearly a quid pro quo and not really welfare.

Libs whine about corporate welfare apparently to deflect the well deserved criticism that leftwingers have created and expanded the welfare class. Expanding jobs and so forth is hardly as pernicious as creating dependent dem voters who are a drain on society
