    Is cheerleading a sport?

Is cheer leading a sport? Surely if golf is a sport then something actually requires an athletic ability as such cheerleeding should be considered a sport as well.

    Cheerleading not a sport, says U.S. judge - U.S. news - Life - msnbc.com

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Yes it can be.
Depends on what the squad does though.

Just a few jumps and a woo, not so much.
Doing the pyramid stuff and acrobatics, definitely.

no it is an artistic discipline much like ballet. but then again so is diving. In reality, a sport is w here you have to react to and counter an opponent. Boxing, wrestling, basketball, raquet sports are all sports. Diving, gymnastics, shooting events, the high jump are all disciplines. stuff like track or swimming have an element of both since you cannot prevent the guy in the lane next to you from running his fastest but you are able to react to his position on the track and try to overcome it.

some sports have aspects that are disciplines. For example, the free throw in basketball, the serve in tennis or table tennis are both discplines within a sport.

    cheerleading is purely a discipline.

To me, a sport involves competition beyond, "Ours are cuter than yours." Is there competitive cheerleading? Is there a yearly schedule of cheerleading competitions? The answer is no. Therefore, it is not a sport to me.

What matters, though, is Title IX's definition of a sport. The Dept of Education hasn't ruled on this since 1975. We haven't seen the last of the case, I'm guessin'.

Well, I see you're egzakly right. If there are competitions, then I think it's a sport. I wonder what grounds the court used to come to that decision. Maybe, to coin a phrase from Seinfeld's Elaine, it's not "sport worthy." Looked it up -- the court decided it was under-developed and too disorganized. Huh. I think the Dept of Ed should weigh in on this one. It's really their call.

Is American Idol a sport? How about dancing with the stars? Poker? Chess? all have competitions. Chess for at least a century.

    Re: Is cheerleading a sport?

I answered "Yes" to the poll question.

    But, it depends.

On the level of athletics/gymnastics involved.

And probably on whether it's competitive cheerleading or not.

But given those two, hell yes it’s a sport.

And regarding golf, wouldn’t it be more fun to watch if the players had to run to the next tee?

No. Chearleading is not a sport. Synchronized swimming is not a sport. Diving is not a sport. (EDIT: Dance isn't a sport either.)

A sport must involve competition involving actual, objective, quantitative scoring. None of this judges deciding who looked cooler crap.
