Is cheer leading a sport? Surely if golf is a sport then something actually requires an athletic as such cheerleeding should be considered a sport as well.

Cheerleading not a sport, says U.S. judge - U.S. news - Life - msnbc.com

no it is an artistic discipline much like ballet. but then again so is diving. In reality, a sport is w here you have to react to and counter an opponent. Boxing, wrestling, basketball, raquet sports are all sports. Diving, gymnastics, shooting events, the high jump are all disciplines. stuff like track or swimming have an element of both since you cannot prevent the guy in the lane next to you from running his fastest but you are able to react to his position on the track and try to overcome it.

some sports have aspects that are disciplines. For example, the free throw in basketball, the serve in tennis or table tennis are both discplines within a sport.

cheerleading is purely a discipline.

To me, a sport involves competition beyond, "Ours are cuter than yours." Is there competitive cheerleading? Is there a yearly schedule of cheerleading competitions? The answer is no. Therefore, it is not a sport to me.

What matters, though, is Title IX's definition of a sport. The Dept of Education hasn't ruled on this since 1975. We haven't seen the last of the case, I'm guessin'.

There are cheer leading competitions.

Well, I see you're egzakly right. If there are competitions, then I think it's a sport. I wonder what grounds the court used to come to that decision. Maybe, to coin a phrase from Seinfeld's Elaine, it's not "sport worthy." Looked it up -- the court decided it was under-developed and too disorganized. Huh. I think the Dept of Ed should weigh in on this one. It's really their call.

Is American Idol a sport? How about dancing with the stars? Poker? Chess? all have competitions. Chess for at least a century.

I answered "Yes" to the poll question.

But, it depends.

On the level of athletics/gymnastics involved.

And probably on whether it's competitive cheerleading or not.

But given those two, hell yes it’s a sport.

And regarding golf, wouldn’t it be more fun to watch if the players had to run to the next tee?

No. Chearleading is not a sport. Synchronized swimming is not a sport. Diving is not a sport. (EDIT: Dance isn't a sport either.)

A sport must involve competition involving actual, objective, quantitative scoring. None of this judges deciding who looked cooler crap.

Is figure skating a sport?

Is figure skating a sport?

Hmmm... by my standards, I'd have to say "no". It's sole source of competition is the subjective will of judges deciding who did a better job rather than an actual goal to achieve, right? Hence, no.

Acrobatics is a sport, cheerleading isn't a sport. However, acrobatics plays a part in cheerleading.

It depends on how its judged. It takes effort, organization and coordination from a team. Team sparring and team forms are part of Tae Kwon Do competitions, so why not cheerleading?

tae kwan do sparring is clearly a sport. Kata is a discipline.

It requires discipline for point sparring technique to be acquired. Kata's are more disipline heavy, yes. But still considered part of the 'sport' of TKD. My point is how its judged. The katas are still sport and cheerleading could be judged, and are frankly not too philosophically different from Katas. I dont se how they judged cheerleading to not be a sport. I have a philosophical disagreement with that.

As I would view it, doing a "better job" IS the "actual goal to achieve".

In figure skating, acrobatics, gymnastics (same?), competitive cheerleading, etc.

The judges are the referees/arbiters/umpires of the successful landing of the respective sport's version of a goal/basket/shot/run/score/whatever. By accomplishing various tasks/activates, etc., to the satisfaction of the judges the athletes “score”.

Now, I would say that the things I mentioned already are less of a "full sport", if you will, than, say, football...

But still, I consider them a sport.

do you understand the difference between a "sport" and "discpline" Many coaches do including Mr. Kisik Lee, current US olympic archery coach who notes archery is a discipline. Its a martial art he correctly notes but a discipline like the KATA while the TKD in the Olympics is a pure sport as is boxing.

One can tell you have no experience with cheerleaders!!!

Um...yeah...there are competitions and it can be beyond brutal. Tremendous athletic ability as well.

Golf and bowling BTW are games...they are not sports...

Since you're so smart please define "sport". Its not like theyre having to seriously judge whether cheerleading is one or not.

sport as defined by many coaches I have dealt with-(of both disciplines like archery or sports such as table tennis and my old coach, Lee, Dal Joon) involves having to deal with and countering the actions of an opponent. Dodging a punch from a boxer, returning the serve of a tennis player, blocking the blitz of a defensive back, avoiding the slide tackle of a sweeper in soccer, returning the loop drive of a table tennis player, countering a leg shot by a wrestler, blocking a jump shot of a power forward, or fielding a screaming line drive of a hitter are all example of why those competitions are sport.

disciplines, shooting an arrow, throwing a javelin, clearing a high jump, putting a golf ball, dismounting a pommel horse, doing the Iron Cross on the rings, diving, trampoline, shooting a free pistol, perform a triple axel for example

Also I dont give a crap who kisik lee is.

for a college student you sure seem to eschew learning. He coached Simon Fairweather to an olympic gold medal among other things

how about you? do you have a varsity letter?
