I think there are many ways of teaching these things WITHOUT reciting a pat set of phrases that do not inspire actual thought.

I pledge allegiance to the flag, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Sorry, I just wanted that last part to stand out.

So... it teaches them that it's the American flag?

Nearly. They are taught that they have a duty of fidelity to a piece of coloured cloth.

    Impossible to disagree more......
There was a time before the POA(pledge......), which was bought on by a fear of communism..
I'm not that old that I know what was said during that time..

Sooo.... America. Uh huh. So, it tells them that it's the US flag. Something that's completely doable without a totalitarianism "pledge".

I'd love to know how many 6 yr olds know what 'republic' is anyway. Hell, my 13 yr old niece doesn't. But they do know what the US flag looks like, and that didn't require a ****ing pledge to teach them.

Making anything 'mandatory' suggests there will be punishment for not doing it.

By punishing someone for *not* saying something - we're infringing on the 1st Amendment.
