Or maybe making threats of eternal damnation or promises of eternal paradise is just emotional manipulation effective for recruiting new followers. An accidental or perhaps intentional early form of marketing.
Well religion has definitely morphed into something along those lines in a lot of ways, but I think it would be cynical to assume that the original message held that intent.
I personally would like it if Jesus were somehow revived and walked the earth again. Maybe then many Christians of the world and all their varied sects could learn what the love of Christ actually means, and would stop their hateful ways towards other human beings. I would wish the same for Muslims and Jews, and their appropriate prophets.
