Electronic license plates - good idea?

    What is it?
California is considering electronic license plates which would look normal when the car is moving, but when stopped at a red light, would flash advertisements to the motorist behind them (rear plate only).

    Why do it?

California lawmakers are considering this to open a new revenue stream for the State, claiming it would help alleviate the existing $19 billion dollar deficit.

    What's the down side?
How long before kids hack into this and show porn, play video's, or use it to promote their own things or, to turn the license plate dark to avoid police, or change the plate # for criminal activity? What is the potential to distract the driver while slowing behind a stopped car for more accidents?

“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

That's just what we need... one more distraction on the road.

It's bull****, how much will these plates cost? Why not just tax that hell out of illegals?

Absolutely not. Essentially they are hijacking all cars and making them moving billboards. If someone's car is going to be forced to advertise then they deserve the profits. Plus I can't see this as a safe thing either. In many states it's illegal to have neon and other flashy things around license plates because they say that they distract other drivers and can cause wrecks. I don't think flashing adds on stopped cars would be much safer for traffic. Would this not also remove Californian citizens' rights to own vanity plates?

Another dumb idea proposed by our state legislature, among a whole lot of other dumb ideas they've come up with.

I have a good idea for them: Let's quit spending money we don't have. Now, there's an original plan, one they don't seem to have thought of before.

Maybe they can have an electronic license plate Bingo system. Motorists could have Bingo ready devices put onto their steering wheels. It would all be connected to the numbers on the license plates. Payments would be electronically sent. People could play while stuck in traffic!

That could pave the way for more sophisticated gambling while driving schemes, all to fund the government's bloated budgets!

"Sir, did you see the license plate of the man who hit you?"

"Yes, officer. It was a blue Dodge with California tags. The plate had some golden arches on it and said I'm lovin it".
