My biggest concern with an atheist candidate would be if he was one of those militant anti-religious types. Assuming that he wasn't one of those guys and the rest of his positions were largely in line with my views, I'd vote for an athiest without batting an eye.

Lots of worry about atheist being anti religious and militantly so but .. our poll reveals in a politically correct form mind you that over 10% here alone would vote against them on the idea that they have no faith at all which is definitly a militant reaction on behalf of the religious voters. I would suspect depending on the demographics of the region that number would only be higher and in some areas a majority would discriminate against them.

If people vote for candidates based on there religious affiliation, or a lack thereof, rather than there political views, then they represent all that is wrong with the world.

Just curious, kaya....

Why did you leave off "....and prosperity" at the end of your signature?

Well, that's part of the quote. Just wondering why you didn't post the entire sentence. No biggie.

But the end of the sentence you posted is "...and prosperity." I'm not asking why you didn't post the entire context, just finish the sentence! LOL! Again, it's not a big deal...just curious.

Ill change it for you mellie :D
hehe

Phew! I can go on with my life now! LOL! Have a good day, kaya.

Simple question, would you vote for a candidate if they were an atheist? Or would their atheism be a deal-breaker for you?

Of course Id vote for a atheist, religion isnt a big part of it for me at all.

In fact someone could lose my vote for having TO MUCH relgion fater than they could for having to little.

Yes, but is complicated.

I'm colombian. Here, the green candidate for president, Antanas Mockus, once said in an interview that he didn't believe in God. I don't have a problem with that, however, the week after, as he saw he was losing votes with that statement, he said that he does believe in God, his family, and even the Catholic Church started defending the candidate.

I think you can't change your faith in two days. I would vote for an atheist candidate if he or she is convinced that God doesn't exist. I would vote for a christian candidate if he or she really act in government like a christian would act (Solidarity, tolerance and other values).

What's your point? That religious folks can be militant radicals too? Hardly a newsflash. Pretty much any belief system, philosophy, or political lean has its share of radicals. Both religion and atheism are not exempt from that rule.

I wouldn't support a radical religious candidate either. I lost all interest in Mike Huckabee when I heard him talk about reshaping the Constitution in God's image or whatever nonsense he was spouting.

I was only making a point. You weren't the only one to point out "militant" atheist. Come to think of it though if a guy was running for office and he believed in the toothfairy and wrote up some bunch of social morals to live by based on the tooth fairy.. I'd be "militant" towards that and if that makes me a "militant" atheist then so be it.

Honestly, does it matter?

Being more religious has no correlation to you being a better person. Especially if you're running for office. Nor does it make you more competent. The only real issue is if you push your religion or anti-religion into policy. For instance, pushing Intelligent Design (aka Animism) or Creationism as science is a problem as is trying to strip out all religious references and rituals. Well, there's another issue, but it's always on the religious side. A belief that God talks to you or that you are beholden to God and not the people and Constitution of this country is a huge problem to me.

I ran across this local paper out of Honolulu:

Nishihara: So regardless of whether or not it follows the law, you would go with the Bible?

Okino: Yes

No laughing matter » Honolulu Weekly

That's a guy who should not be elected due to his religious views superceding the laws he is suppose to uphold.
