I don't think that religion is the "most correct" answer, as there are many people that are agnostic or atheist, and therefore do not subscribe to any religious beliefs. Society may play a small role in an individuals moral standards, but most people do not allow others to dictate their personal beliefs. There are a few things that could be considered universally right or wrong - such as, it's common sense that murdering someone, or stealing, is wrong. But I think ultimately, your moral codes are derived from your own personal experiences and how you view them, and how you view the world as a whole. While a person's beliefs may not seem rational to someone else, that person obviously has some rationale for why they believe the way they do.
