Is wellfare today un-American?

Wellfare... Is it un-American

Yes and no, because historically speaking, the Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded upon socialist principles. The colony almost failed because people refused to work since they did not own their land nor the fruits of their labor. The governor quickly discovered that by allowing the citizens to own the land and the fruits of their labor did the colony survive.

I have guns, dogs and have no problems killing those who I hate. Your argument fails.

My argument is that the masses burned and destroyed Rome. That is a historical fact. Your idea of fending off and killing desperate people in large numbers only works in your own mind. But relax. We have socialized programs that keep our most needy from becoming insane pyromaniacs.

Therefore: welfare is American.

Income redistribution-fueled as a way for dem politicians to gain office and with it power and wealth-is going to destroy this nation

Welfare wouldn't be necessary if Republican big business owners were not inherantly corrurpt and completely dishonest. Welfare is here to stay and there is NOT A DAMN THING REPUBLICANS CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Ok - while I feel that support *is* American . . . it's not *all* Corporate fault.

A large part is *still* and always will be personal accountability, actions - and an overall lack of concern. . .there are countless programs out there meant to help people pay for schooling, books, transportation, help people write resumes and everything else - people *have* to take advantage of them.

Not all areas provide these programs, which is unfortunate . . . but in the areas where these programs are available I think a decrease in the # of people who are on 100% assistance should be evident if they were beneficial (but is it? I can't find statistics on this at all)

All in all - it's a multi-facet problem and giving people support is only dealing with one portion of the problem, it's not in any way attempting to address the roots of the issue.

explain=that makes no sense whatsoever. Do you think Dem big business owners are pure of heart> or that only Republicans own big businesses.

The American Way is to take care of your own/help people and sadly we are doing a crappy job.

The right wing believes in charity. They are much more charitable than the left. The left wants to take money from the haves and give to the have-nots without their permission.

If the right believes in charity why are they so opposed to Social Programs that help others?

If the right believes in charity why are they so opposed to Social Programs that help others?

Because many social programs have gone *to the extreme* - and instead of temporarily helping people out it's become a permanent job-alternative.
People's social opinions *of* the programs while being *on* the programs have changed, as well. Not *everyone* - not even *a majority* but when some people here and there have this attitude it's hard not to be bothered by it or notice it - it makes you wonder just how many others on various assistance programs feel the same way. Rather than seeing it as "the government is helping us out for a while" many are openly voicing that they feel "entitled to it" - and no longer truly appreciate the assistance.

The systems are easily taken advantage of and abused, as well - crimes related to selling benefits and other types of fraud are quite common and only increasing.

The programs are also poorly designed- they give plenty of assistance to many of it's participants, while others don't receive enough benefits. .. so it's unfair (because it's different state to state)
Also - there are only afew "stepping stone" programs where their goal is to get people *off* the need for the program without just ripping it out from under their feet. When I was on the system it was easy to fleece if I wanted to - and there was very little incentive to take on more financial responsibility for myself and my children. My personal desire to no longer need food stamps was the only incentive I had.

There are things that people *see* often that rub people the wrong way: at the check out line the Mom is buying a bunch of food with food stamps - and it's often junk like soda and snack. . . and then, with $30.00 cash, she buys a carton of cigarettes. . . things like this always tick me off. If someone *needs* help feeding their children then they shouldn't *be* satisfying their cravings. . . I've even seen someone try to buy liquor with food stamps. ???

So - unless they fix stepping-stone (lack of) problems, do more to get people on their own two feet, and craft more strict rules about *what* you can and cannot purchase with benefits - many people will continue to see *these* problems and zoom in on them.

You never notice the people who truly need the benefits - and who don't take advantage of them - because they don't flaunt it or stick out like a sore thumb in the process. . . so to many people these questionable situations are *all* that they *ever* see.

It always makes me laugh when people talk about these things as if it was back in the day when women could have a welfare gravy train. Sorry but most of these have gone Away and are not happening anymore. You are only allowed to be on the system for a certain amount of time and during that time you must be looking for and get a job. They days of Welfare for Life are pretty much over. So some folks need to get over being mad that someone is getting some help and be happy they live in a country that tries to help their own. We are not doing near enough in this reguard though. If it were up to me? We would have a lot more social programs.

THis poll is unAmerican. Welfare is here to stay and there is NOTHING republicans can do about it.

Its always a fine balance. I can see the other side of the argument, people should be responsible for themselves. They should have a job and pay their own way. I don't think that most people who support welfare disagree with that. I don't. But we should also treat everyone with equal concern, and if someone has to sleep out on the street, or skip meals, I don't think that we can honestly say we are doing that.

If the right believes in charity why are they so opposed to Social Programs that help others?

some would note that such social programs really don't help others or are abused by many that use them but rather

1) are designed to create a dependent class who are addicted to government entitlements and, thus

2) vote for dem elites

3) and expand the government and the power of the dem elites.

so while no one I know is opposed to all safety net programs, many of us realize that when dem leaders scream about compassion, they are really howling to expand their voter base and the size of government.

and the way things are going, we have to stop this nonsense because government size, waste and spending is out of control

WRONG.

It's only a horrible idea in the eyes of a greedy few.

you claim to be a tea party advocate and yet you think that opposing the constant expansion of welfare-socialism is "Greedy"

real greed is trying to get credit and power by using the wealth of others to buy the votes of your minions

alot more social programs? how are we going to pay for it given the deficit. and what are you going to do about the massive rate of births to unwed mothers--being born to a single parent family is the greatest predictor of poverty.

Absolutely the socialist scam of stealing money to buy votes is completely un-American.

It's also unconstitutional.

Then again, it's also flat wrong and immoral.

No wonder the Left love it so.

The AMERICAN notion is one of voluntary assistance, you know, "freedom to choose"? Ever hear of that strange idea? The worker has a body, so it should be his choice on where his charitble dollars go, if he chooses to have any charitable dollars in the first place.

This notion that "charity" can be compelled at gun point totally ignores the definition of the word "charity".

I know way too many people who "live off wellfare, its hooked up bro". This has been hevily taken advantage. If You think weed unmotivates, try giving people free govt. money and see what happens, oh wait, we already have -_-... Not legit stats but id say for every 1 person that deserves government money, 3 people dont, sadly they all "need" it now because they are addicted to govenment entitlement programs...

Unless someone has delivered a service or a product, no one "deserves" TAXPAYER money. Being poor isn't a justification for someone to reach into my pocket and help themslelves.

EVERY poor citizen of the United States should be in the streets protesting the invasion of the United States by Mexico and their loss of jobs.

Instead, they demand stolen money and vote for the people who are allowing an enemy nation to invade and take jobs they could be doing to earn a living.

As far as I can tell, there is no such thing as "american." We are all individuals here and should act as such. The idea of an authentic american culture personally pisses me off because such a thing, if enforced, would restrict my freedoms and suggests a top down approach to life (people must be made to conform to some culture) instead of a bottom up (people decide for themselves and act accordingly).

Oh, no.

There's a very real American culture.

A man is measured by what he's accomplished, not by who his parents are. A man stands on his own feet, and is ashamed to take charity.

People who sit around on their fat lazy asses demanding money stolen from Americans aren't themselves Americans, no more than the fleas on a wolf are wolves.

There is nothing unAmerican about accepting public assistance.

Only when the "public assistance" is PRIVATELY provided, when the supplicant (I'm using the right word) recognizes that he's owed nothing by strangers, and when he's determined to get off charity as soon as he can, and, if possible, either pay it back or stand ready to help others.

There's nothing unAmerican about providing public assistance.

There's nothing un-American in offering charity willingly as a matter of private conscience to private agencies to help the needy.

There's nothing American about the government TAKING money, under threat of force and violence, from people for the express purpose of giving it to others simply because they are poor.

The very existence of any such system is a corruption of American beliefs of the role of government as expressed by the Declartion of Independence, the Constitution, and of over 100 years of American tradition of self-reliance and voluntary charity. The system is naturally open to corruption. It's corrupted the spirits of those who live on it, it's corrupted those who run it and are employed by it, and it's corrupted the politicians who promote it.

Generations of Americans have been corrupted by the wrong notion that total strangers "owe" them "their" money.

My two cents: If people are complaining about the unemployment rate, yet they oppose assistance to the unemployed... they need their head checked.
/no relation. :)

The people are supporting the amount of money the government is stealing the throw at the unemployed, while not only allowing tens of millions of invading aliens to remain in this country but insisting those who want these invaders to go home are racists, have their heads where the sun never shines.

The mobs of the homeless unemployed Romans burned the place to the ground.

Actually, the Roman Senate quashed a suggestion that the slaves be required to wear special clothes to mark them for what they were. They didn't want the slaves to realize just how many of them there were, because if the slaves revolted in Rome itself, they'd win.

I would rather my hard earned tax dollars go towards helping the poor rather than bailing out of big biz. and rich criminals.

I would rather my hard earned tax dollars go towards helping the poor rather than bailing out of big biz. and rich criminals.

I would rather my hard earned dollars not have the prefix "tax" in front of them.

And that means they shouldn't be stolen from me to bride either big business or little lazybones.

SO THE BIG QUESTION...

is it unamerican for the federal government to take my money and give it to someone else because they think they are entitled to it.

MY TWO CENTS...

America was partly founded on this idea of "the prusuit for happiness". to me it seems wellfare is more like the "gift of happiness". Is there an excuss to be on wellfare today? I dont understand how someone born and raised in Mexico that doesn't speak english can somehow cross the border illegally and find work to better their families back in Mexico but an American born and raised in this nation some how cant make ends meet. Is the American public making excusses for these people on wellfare, and by giving it to them are we just keeping them content with there current situation. I think so. It seems that a majority of people on wellfare keep repeating the same cycle generatin after generation. There are people getting wellfare that have things like cable TV, cellphones, Internet etc... I'm all about helping someone out, but if im going to give someone a helping hand its going to be on my terms. i want to decide if that person deserves my help, not the government deciding for me.

I think that the lack of labor rights and consumer protections as well as the unwillingness to pay taxes for national infrastructure is more un-American than welfare is.

Money for votes is a republican specialty. Big businesses provide the money and then tell republicans how to vote and what laws should be created,.
