She can't win. It is a private institution and Florida is an "at will" state. You can be fired for any reason at any time, period. The worst that she can do is maybe collect unemployment. The law suit will go no place.

If she had claimed discrimination, she maybe could have gotten something. Not for this as it was not discriminatory.

discriminate   /v. dɪˈskrɪməˌneɪt; adj. dɪˈskrɪmənɪt/ Show Spelled [v. dih-skrim-uh-neyt; adj. dih-skrim-uh-nit] Show IPA verb, -nat·ed, -nat·ing, adjective
–verb (used without object)
1. to make a distinction in favor of or against a person or thing on the basis of the group, class, or category to which the person or thing belongs rather than according to actual merit; show partiality: The new law discriminates against foreigners. He discriminates in favor of his relatives.
2. to note or observe a difference; distinguish accurately: to discriminate between things.

The school made a distinction when they fired her for getting pregnant prior to getting married. The group would then be that she was part of unmarried women getting pregnant.

Discrimination is a national issue, and the federal laws prohibiting discrimination trump Florida's laws. She has a case, and if presented correctly, she should win. And rightly so... the school being private is irrlevant. This is not like saying men can't have ponytails or employees can't date each other in the slightest.

If a school with an Afro-centric curriculum wanted only Black teachers, should they be forced to hire Whites?

That is entirely different. They can not hire people within certain parameters, but once hired, they would not be able to fire them due to being white.

Because the issue is pregnancy the school is going to lose. I am sorry for you far right christinazi republicans ... but the school CANNOT fire anybody for being pregnant. I hope the school gets put out of business and the administrator who made the call loses everything he/she/it they own and ends up sleeping in a box on a beach.

The far right has always had issues with keeping their religion to themselves. May this lesson teach them to keep their religion out of their businesses and politics. Now ... it needs to cost the useless assholes some money.

So if they don't believe blacks should be teachers, they can fire them too, right?

That is not a good argument as racial discrimination IS illegal. Besides if this was the case do you honestly think they would have hired her in the first place?

Did you even bother to read the story? She was not fired for being pregnant. She was fired for pre-marital sex. Which the school says violated their moral code which she was made aware of when she was hired.

This has nothing to do with the far right or anything political.

Oh bull ****. Having sex is not the schools business. Only a wing nut would think it would be.

So what kind of teacher was she? Did she teach chemistry? math? English? bible class?

You know, I still don't think that's going to fly when it gets presented in court. The school has zero authority, even as her employer, to enforce such a mandate on her private life. I think her legal team will probably go the "hostile work environment" route and nail that school to the wall.

Sorry but individual rights trump a business' rights IMHO. After all individual rights are what makes this a great nation.

The reality bat has never been used on you, right?:2razz:

The least they could have done is allow her to defend herself by using the same criteria that Jesus would use...."Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".

I actually agree with that.

Just because they may be able to fire her legally, does not make it right thing to do.

And what individual rights were violated?

In the city of Dallas the smoker will get a 250$ fine and so will the bar.

Wow glad I don't live in Dallas then. In my town I haven't been to a bar yet that doesn't allow smoking.

Agreed. I think the debate is really centered on whether or not she has a case for a discrimination lawsuit. I think the "moral" code is a joke obviously, but whether or not this qualifies as unfair discrimination, I'm not sure since it's a private business, and I'm assuming they had this rule as part of her contract.

Yep, this.

It's unfortunate that the baby might be born into poverty now though. In my opinion thats not the Christian thing to do but whatever.

It's not like cults care. The only reason they have these so called "ethics" is to keep members in line and make them easier to control. Cults tend to restrict behavior which expresses human emotion and individualism, since it tends to distract from serving the organization. It's a rule for cults, all cults have ethics codes like this which have nothing to do with any actual human ethics, Scientology, Fundamentalism, you name it - they're really all the same.

She has a degree and is educated. Why would you presume she'd be unable to find work after this?
People get fired all the time - I was when I was pregnant, twice, it's not your employers concern what you do after you're not employed with them in the future.

It is a parent's place, though, to ensure they have an adequate means of support for their child - so maybe her idea to become a teacher at a Christian school where her pre-marital sex might be in question wasn't too wise.

In the same way that's it's unwise for a pedophile to try to become a priest!

I can understand it in restaurants but a bar?

I'm an x smoker and I love the **** out of the stuff but I'm not a smoking nazi like so many x smokers turn into.

I disagree. Florida is an at will state. Read post #32 for details: http://www.debatepolitics.com/polls...ire-teacher-fornication-4.html#post1058796402

Read it already and disagree with your analysis of what "at will" actually means.

Her lawyers are going to go the "hostile work environment" and/or discrimination route. This firing will never stand up to court scrutiny and this school is going to be paying some heavy damages if they don't settle with her first. Either way, she is gonna make a mint off this, "at will" or not.

Well just to start her right to privacy. The school is trying to step into her bedroom.

She gave up any right to privacy when she told the school the conception was before they got married. So no reasonable "right to privacy" can be expected.

I would be willing to bet a platinum membership it will not hold up.

PS That is not my "analysis" it is from the State Of Florida's own web site.

Strange definition of what a "cult" is.

They are not trying to control anyone. It is understood with any Christian org that certain morals be upheld or be fired. I mean would a Christian school want a Muslim teaching? Of course not. A Muslim school would not want a Christian teacher. Being a private organization makes them allot of things, but a cult??? That is laughable at best.
