Well, Ok, but that's not the context in which the original statement was made, nor my response.

which is exactly why there is a legitimate reason for honest people to own high capacity semi auto firearms. someone with good cover and an open lane of fire with an FN FAL or a Steyr Aug is gonna make life miserable for a pack of wilding urban youths or a gang of crack heads

Its getting a little rusted now, but it still shoots most the time when I pull the trigger (If I ever get enough money saved I'll upgrade!) Couple hundred ducks have been tacken over the past few years with it I would suppose.

The serial killer was a local, more or less.

When I was about 22, I was involved in an armed standoff with two neighbors, who had moved to entrap me on my own property for reasons unknown at the time. It turned out to be 1/2 honest mistake and 1/2 stupidity on their part, but it's a long story. Nobody died, fortunately.

Ever heard of home invasions? They don't just happen to crack dealers anymore.

A few years ago a pair of muggers tried to pull a hammer-and-anvil move on me and my son in Wal-Mart parking lot. They backed down because I spotted the move and reached for my gun before they were ready. Had I been unarmed (or unalert) the outcome might have been very very different.

If you don't want a gun that's your right, I'm just saying there are plenty of legitimate reasons to own and carry.

The other side of this scenario is if your neighbor has food hoarded and you don't, you're going to need a firearm to go get some lunch.

OTOH, if you had enough sense to put away some food and other preps against the possibility of disaster, you won't NEED to try to rob or murder your neighbor for his stash.

My experience is that most people who store food also have guns, and they are capable of using them.

There isn't any reason why you "should" be scared of your neighbors. I'm not afraid of my neighbors, and I'm not as a rule scared of strangers, but one of the reasons for this is that I know how to defend myself, and I don't put myself in risky situations. It's not only a gun ownership issue- it's a smart-thinking prevention issue too. By all means, I don't encourage living in fear as a way of life, but ignorance can get you hurt much easier than knowledge and good sense.

Yeah, but, you know, say you haven't built up your stash yet, and he's got water and jerky and tuna and crackers and everything...

I read Lucifer's Hammer. After the impact, you either need to have supplies and guns and ammo

you need to have guns and ammo.

Course, it's moot to me. I live in Florida, and when the comet makes water impact, we're all history down here.
