What do you think about the state of mainstream music today?

In my opinion, I think most of the stuff on the radio charts sound "flat" and dull.

1) Hip-hop. I think real hip-hop died in the 90s. Back then the genre was mostly about stuff you could relate to like growing up in a bad part of the city, being pissed at the government, getting away from trouble, or something with meaning. The beats where mixed creatively and they were smooth. Most of it was inspirational. Remember how good hip hop was when 2pac was alive? ...Now all I hear are songs about how much money you have in your pocket with auto-tune vocals. If 2pac and Biggie were still alive, Lil Wayne would be working at burger king right now.

2) R&B. The artist today have rhythm I guess, but where is the blues? The R&B I hear on the radio sounds like teen pop... I'd say this genre died in the late 70s or early 80s.

3) Rock. I think rock music died in the mid 90s. Most rock artists today don't seem to have influence from legends like Pink Floyd, the Beatles, ect. Rock has been tuned down and stripped from it's roots in my opinion to get on the pop stations. We are getting an "emo" image in the rock scene. There are still a few bands that have some rhythm like Disturbed and Slipknot but of course the mainstream only plays their slow PG songs and they are played on the radio rarely.

As for MTV, I don't think it's even fair to call it "Music TV" anymore. They play a music videos sometimes yes.. but for the most part it's full of 'reality' shows.

in a cluster of asterisks, its ****

there are only a few good rock bands bands, and most of them get shyted by the record labels anyway

I don't even know what constitutes mainstream music today. I listen to an 80s music station and get all the pre-grunge greatness from that decade. The only grunge band I ever really liked was Soundgarden.

YouTube- Soundgarden - Spoonman (Music Video)

YouTube- Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days (Video Version)

if you like soundgarden you should listen to Temple Of The Dog, same singer, but a mellower sound.

but whilst i like grunge, it was the beginning of the end for good rock music.

Nobody does it like this anymore (my favorite song from age 14)

I stay on the fringe and listen to indie music, or any modern music that is actually music.

Don't call it music.

However, the problem with a lot of people now is that they see that there is no classic rock in mainstream these days and say "oh this generation of music is horrible." This is actually untrue, a lot of my favorite music is folk and indie rock, which has little exposure compare to the likes of Lady Gaga and what not.

So I denounce and reject current mainstream as well as people who are too damn nostalgic for their own good. Its good to have a mix like me. :D I listen to a lot of 1960s stuff as well as modern stuff.

Not big into mainstream music. I do like gaga, but I am more into Jack Johnson and GLove, along with old rock.

What is some good folk to listen to?

Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Band Of Horses, Department of Eagles just to name a few ...

I prefer industrial music and I doubt that stuff will ever be on the radio.

I have never been much into mainstream music. I prefer music that is more out there, angrier, edgier. That music more speaks to my soul.

I'm a big fan of modern rock and alternative. I dislike most rap and pop, but there are a few songs I like alright occasionally. I can't stand country.

Im an old rocker but now I listen to Americana, anti-Nashville Outlaw country, Texas country, folk, and bluegrass.

It sucks out loud.

I predict that within 10 years a computer will have a number one hit and a Grammy.

**** Cher and Madonna for making that autotuner popular.

We are already seeing signs of it.

Once this technique is perfected, I think we will see computers start making music based on these calculations in fairly short order. This means mainstream music will become even more vanilla and unsurprising than it was previously.

Gimme industrial, at least that music has an experimental and exploratory element within it.

Most of the mainstream stuff that passes for music is ****. I listen to Metal, DMX, Cypress Hill, Rammstein, Das Ich and some Electronic groups (The Crystal Method, Prodigy).

I don't mind it. I used to be one of those people who thought that if it wasn't heavy metal or something close to it then it is crap.Today my mind is more open to different kinds of music everything from country to rap. That said I still mostly listen to talk radio when I am in the car, radio stations tend to play the same **** over and over and over again.

As for MTV, I don't think it's even fair to call it "Music TV" anymore. They play a music videos sometimes yes.. but for the most part it's full of 'reality' shows.
I think they should change it to DARSTV(Dumb ass reality shows television) or maybe change the "M" in MTV to mean moron instead of music. The fact that they are even allowed to call themselves MTV as in music television is laughable. MTV was one of the reasons I got cable so that I could listen to headbangers ball and then they stopped showing that and eventually it seems like they do not show music anymore.

Not sure. One thing I am curious about is if this algorithm is teachable. Music preference tends to change over time, even if slightly and something like this would need to be recalibrated as a result.

However, since the music industry wants to be able to make a profit on a sure bet, I am pretty sure that if this technology is proven to work, they will start using it very quickly and I think it would probably shut out any music that does not follow the specific format.

The **** that is on the radio today is roughly the equivalent to the **** that was on the radio in 1980. The good **** isn't usually on the radio.

I have momentary infatuations with certain bands. Right now, one of my favorites is OK Go.

I love their videos:

At my house, we listen to a lot of Vampire Weekend, Noah and the Whale, Matt & Kim, the Wombats, Pink Spiders, Hush Sound, We are Scientists, Phantom Planet, The Strokes, The Hives, Spoon, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, Scissor Sisters, Killers...

Here's a good playlist for you to sample:

5 Years Time - Noah and the Whale
Metal Detektor - Spoon
This Too Shall Pass - OK Go
Dropped - Phantom Planet
Daylight - Matt & Kim
Take Your Mama - Scissor Sisters
Dashboard - Modest Mouse
Horchata - Vampire Weekend
Let's Dance to Joy Division - The Wombats
All These things I've Done - The Killers
You Only Live Once - The Strokes
Hate to Say I Told You So - The Hives
Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand

I like Metacritic and Mog for finding new music.

I mostly listen to old rock and old R&B (generally late 60's- early 80's), or sometimes classical. Can't stand new country/western, but I do like some of the really old stuff (Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and similar). Most of the new stuff that seems to be played on the radio locally seems either highly depressive or highly angry.

The main stream music is mainly marketed to younger generations (20s or 30s and younger). Sex, drugs, money, relationships, drinking, partying, life in general,... have the subjects really changed as much as you think? Most people the music is marketed toward can relate to one of these subjects.

The content hasn't changed much IMO. The main area where music has changed in in the way it sounds. I enjoy the music part, and sometimes the singing / voice related part... but sometimes I am not a fan of the lyrics.

Why should all music be influenced by those you listed? I agree they are great artists, but you don't have to idolize them to be able to create good music.

I have odd tastes, ranging from the Stones, to Wolfmother, to Audioslave, Muse, Infected Mushroom, MGMT, Ratatat. "Mainstream" music? Like the stuff selling hot today? It is just noise interspread with references to killing black people.
