Re: Do we need a requirement to Vote?

These should be the only requirements for voting-

    18 years of age
    US citizen
    ID/driver's license
    voter registration card
    not currently incarcerated
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    You have to register.

You have to have an address.

You can't have a felony record.

And you need to be able to find the polling place.

The far-righties who want to cut the dopes from the polls should be careful what they wish for.... Palin couldn't pass a basic U.S. History quiz.

What far-righties? The OP is a liberal.

People who aren't allowed to vote shouldn't be allowed to pay taxes, either... since their respective voices have been erased. How many people do you think will be failing on purpose? lol @ ideas like these.

I recall we had a poll tax quite some time back, and I assume we don't have it because it was either declared unconstitutional, or was taken out of practice by a Congress, but how is a test unconstitutional?

    Terrible idea.

It's not always clear where a candidate stands on the issues, nor is there a truly neutral party which would be able to determine if someone truly "understood" the issues or a candidate's stance on them.

Instead, I think there should at least be a basic literacy test. If you can't read, you have no place deciding the political fate of this nation.

This was tried back in the 60s to keep blacks and Latinos from voting. You really want to go there again?

What if you can read Spanish, but not English?
