Should topics which ask for arguments for and against human rights be given a hard line. BAN THEM?! Human rights should be something which are accepted by everybody?

Example questions, which argue for the validity of the human rights legislation which protects the equality of all human beings.

I don't think any topic should be banned, ever. What a stupid poll.

nah, let the discussions rage, they're fun, and occasionally educational, human rights are just another set of rules invented by a governing body, and as such, should be debated as much as any other topic.

No, if fact it's stupid to do so. Why? It's best to discuss these things, hone arguments, and convince people. Otherwise, there's no point to us being on a debate board.

You just joined and already you want the forum to change policies?

Human beings are inherently unequal and human rights are a social construct. These topics should absolutely be up for discussion.

No, only because the vast majority of people skewer the true definition of the word "right". This entitlement society we live in now has tons of people thinking a lot of things are rights, which they are not.

I like the though topics.

I know I get carried away, but that makes then no less enjoyable. I just had a long debate with reff. It got a little out of hand, but all in all it was a good debate and I like the person I was debating with even if I disagreed.

No way. It is a debate forum.

If I think a post is out of line I report it. I try very hard not to get out of line.

Debates can be good, and that is that.

No way in hell.

Those topics are the most interesting to discuss.

And besides, constant examination of tough topics is key to proper understanding of them.

I think the mod team can do a hell of a lot better job at moving bait threads to the basement and unworthy BN threads out of the BN forum, but I don't think they should ban topics.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a unanimous poll with this many voters.

Wow. :2razz:

''What a stupid poll. ''

Not really!

If these 'should we hate?' topics don't have enough counter debaters, they tend to quickly decend into a hate mongering propaganda machine, for bigots, mysogynists, rascists...

''they're fun''

?

''human rights are just another set of rules invented by a governing body''

They are rules for the protection and welfare of human beings, which makes them important.

''convince people''

Have you ever succeeded in convincing a rascist, to change its spots?

''Human beings are inherently unequal and human rights are a social construct. ''

Take any 2 human beings, and you can make a list of pros and cons about each, which will make both equal overall.

''constant examination of tough topics is key to proper understanding of them. ''

True! 1 point from me to you. One can trawl through the threads and search for new and challanging points. Even those threads, which are top heavy with bigots sometimes have a few gems in there.

Though, should the types of people who are rejected in most social circles be given a platform? Is hate mongering a valid political orientation?

The best way to combat stupid speech is with better speech, not by attempting to silence the opposition. This is the ploy that is used by the left to stop religious speech.

Let the market-place of ideas take care of itself. The best ideas will always win in the end. Have faith in the first amendment!

they encourage actually thinking about your point of view on topics you otherwise wouldn't think about, and arguing against other positions, which is always fun.

''human rights are just another set of rules invented by a governing body''

important they are, but they're not perfect, not everyone agrees with them, and everyone has a point of view on them, and most feel strongly one way or the other, making them perfect for debate

Yeah, really.

Not here, they don't. But then, you don't realize that, because you're a noob with an axe to grind.

The bottom right corner of every post has a "quote" button for your convenience :2wave:
