Isn't it fairly obvious to people here that wearing a flag on ones t-shirt is totally acceptable, and even considered patriotic, to most people? It's similar to wearing a hat indoors, kids addressing adults by their first names, and other things that were formally considered bad manners. You can cite some rule on flags from some boy scout rulebook all day long, but common sense tells me that it's okay to wear a flag on a t-shirt.

Although you and I may not agree with what the school did, I do believe they have the right to make that decision. We don't know the whole story. If these guys did this just to cause trouble, kick their asses off campus.

First impressions tells me these boys were intentionally trying to insult the Mexican-American students. Though these boys were being jackasses, they have a right to do so. They should have been allowed to wear the t-shirts, and anyone who threatened them should have been punished.

Only in Commiefornia would something like this happen. Last I checked this was America, Not Mexico. So the so-called offended students have no business being offended by the American flag, nor did any teachers or administrators have any business telling the kids that they couldn't wear American flags on their clothes to not offend the Mexican and students and the students of Mexican decent.

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.

"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.

"They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended," Dominic Maciel, Galli's friend, said.

The boys really had no choice, and went home to avoid suspension. They say they're angry they were not allowed to express their American pride. Their parents are just as upset, calling what happened to their children, "total nonsense."

"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Julie Fagerstrom, Maciel's mom, said. "All they were doing was displaying their patriotic nature. They're expressing their individuality."

But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."
I think if it were my kid, I'd put on my ACU, take my kid back to school and inform the principal that he was returning to class with the he shirt.

There was a kid who was punished for throwing a Mexican flag in the garbage after a student club got permission from the administration to put it up.

The courts disagree, and have done so on several occasions.

What's the logic behind not being able to respect both a minority (mexicans) and a majority (americans) at the same time?

I agree. That's how we abolished the dress code back in my HS.

I didn't say that it was law. I said that it has been determined. By school admins all over the country. In the last 20 years.

If those boys can get kicked out of school for wearing anything, then I have zero sympathy for them. They would wear uniforms if the school board voted for them.

I see I'm still the lone YES vote.
