I love catholic school girl uniforms:twisted:

Maybe that is why so many priests are gay. If they were straight we'd hear about far more girls in catholic schools being molested

Although I appreciate where you're coming from, I would disagree with a nationally imposed curriculum. I feel the current system is already too rigid, and that it is overly fixated on forcing a "liberal arts" education on everyone. Some kids just aren't meant to learn about chemistry and geometry.

I think more latitude in educational choices would go a long way in better preparing certain students for the real world. I think reading is the ONLY thing that should be CONTINUALLY stressed throughout a child's public education; basic arithmetic and grammar skills should be established early on, and supplemented only at the parents' or child's discretion.

I'm a large proponent of trade schools being integrated into the public curriculum.

However, I definitely agree with your underlying sentiment about children and the intellectual malaise they seem conditioned to have. The only ones we can truly blame for this is parents, and that's a whole nother can of worms.

I think that while parents are to be blamed to a large extent, people blame them for the wrong reasons. It's not the parents faults that when their kids come home with a book on biology, the parents say 'Well that's all garbage, the Bible says different'. I think the problem is MUCH larger.

We have integrated religion and the dumb-it-down culture it comes into our schools. We have integrated it to the point where there are people in this country think Global Warming has something to do with local weather. Just read posts by some of our members on this forum. You'll be shocked at the stupidity that comes out of their mouths.

People who have zero training or the intellectual curiosity to look at things beyond a layman's perspective are the telling their kids that science is junk. Have you ever heard of 'Teach The Controversy'? For years now the American right wing has actively push to teach creationism in our schools. While I have no problem with kids learning what creationism is, I do have a problem with the way it has been presented. It hasn't been presented as the opinion of a religious percentage of the population, it has been presented as the opinion of a sizable percentage of scientists. Creationism has no active support in any real sense from the scientific community, however there are evangelicals trying to teach that there is a split in thought among scientists.

The issue in general is not one that falls on parents or their kids but on how we as a society have approached education.

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

I agree that Creationism should be presented as an alternate theory ascribed to by a tiny percentage of scientists, who believe they have evidence to support a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis of the Bible. You could have one lesson on it, respectfully presented.

It would be a good way to broaden the minds of the young people. They need to learn to learn about other viewpoints.

When you think of it, ones belief in how life on Earth originated ultimately is fairly useless information, other than being interesting. So, learning about the various theories is really about becoming an educated person who can have a conversation about something other than American Idol. I don't think the educational system should ever be afraid of presenting a variety of ideas, even unpopular ones.

The principal's last name is Rodriguez, draw your own conclusions...

That adds a new element. Clearly there is a race bias on the part of this principal. I believe it's time for Rodriguez to be fired. We cannot allow biggots to run schools.

From what I've read from you lately, would it be too brash to suggest that you think that everyone should be fired?

No, it would not. Generally though, when I say that I am speaking of people who really do deserve to be fired.

A racist latino principal who crossed the line by suspending students who have done nothing wrong ... NEEDS TO BE FIRED.

A school administrator who suspends students for three days for removing a Mexican flag that has absolutely no place being hung in a school in the United States ... NEEDS TO BE FIRED.... AND THEN DEPORTED.

THese are offenses worthy of harsh action.
