Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

While I strongly oppose the actions taken, a question has arisen from this thread.

If the students were actually causing or had the potential to cause a disruption due to their clothing choices, what were the school authorities supposed to do to prevent it?

As I understand it, the action taken might have defused the immediate situation.

So was it the right answer at the time?

Do what they must to promote a healthy respect for this country. I sympathize with Mexicans and other Hispanics who want to come here. I honestly do. But, I feel that 50 years ago, immigrants faced with a challenge like this from longer time citizen families would have sported their own AmericanaWear the very next day. This, to show their commitment to the country they have presumably adopted.

But, not today. Instead, they are so full of themselves that they think they have a right to be Mexican (or Guatemalan or whatever) first, when they should be American first. I don't mind preserving your heritage, in fact I value it. But we are Americans, here.

The fact that the young patriots knew the wearing would be 'incendiary' is telling of the attitudes of the Hispanics. It absolutely speaks of a disrespect from those students (any who were offended at the American colors) toward this country. The students should wear the clothing every day as a statement until things come to a head.

Again, I absolutely support immigration. But I expect respect. No, I demand it.

Homosexuality is not a sexual act. No wonder you fail to see the comparison. You don't even know what it is. :2wave:

Um....ooooookaaaaaaay...... It's about sex. What's similar about wearing a t-shirting promoting same-sex or ANY sexual relationships and wearing a shirt with the flag on it?

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

In my highschool the fact that they wore bandannas would have gotten them sent out. The fact that they refused to take their bandannas off would have sent them home for a week.

true-no one was ever prosecuted for merely being gay. People who prosecuted for engaging in homosexual sex. Gay rights demonstrations were mainly against archaic laws making "sodomy" illegal or more recently, against government non-recognition of gay marriages

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

Weird how you see no difference between a t-shirt promoting a sexual act and a shirt depicting the American flag. I'm failing to see the comparison.

I think they're exactly the same. If you want to give students free symbolic speech, that includes both popular and unpopular, mainstream and deviant messages.

apparently people who are hostile to the country that is giving them a free education might have been upset. Those are the ones whose heads should be cracked if they attacked people wearing american flags. If they are offended they should GTF out of the usa

Not liking America doesn't mean you have a realistic option, financially or socially, to move elsewhere.

So you're okay with ANY t-shirt being worn at school?

The principal's last name is Rodriguez, draw your own conclusions...

This is the huge strawman on your part.

First of all, what a Gay Pride shirt does promote is a person's pride in who they are. Remember, sexual orientation is by far a larger factor in a person's life than their nationality. Not everybody is an American, but EVERYBODY has a sexual orientation. Why should some be ashamed of theirs when others are accepted?

Secondly, a t-shirt saying 'Gay Pride' doesn't promote sex anymore than a rainbow flag does.

Finally, they are comparable in terms of how a person identifies themselves.

Get it? Got it? Good.

We are making comparisons between t-shirts which have been deemed offensive to some in the past. If you find a gaypride t-shirt offensive, you have absolutely no room to complain when somebody finds your t-shirts, regardless of what they have on them, offensive. It's a two way street.

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

In a world where you can't wear American Flags on the 5th of May: you can't say "Happy Holidays" on Christmas, you can't burn the American flag, you can't wear anything other than an American flag on the 4th of July, no opinion can be expressed that does not correspond to the pre-approved "dominant" opinion.

In short, it's not a world I want to live in.

We're not talking about the world. It's a HS campus. It's been determined many times over that students do not have any rights at school. I don't hear anyone putting down the other aspects of the dress code. When a lad wants to wear long hair, everyone here sides with the school. What's the difference?

Students have no rights at school? Huh? So a teacher can smack a kid across the face and nothing will happen to the teacher?

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

I think what should happen is little Annicia Nunez's parents should make a statement apologizing for their daughter's lack of respect for her new home and enroll her in some after school civics lessons followed by a visit to the rats nest of a country she came from to reinforce how good she has it here.

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

Wasn't there a kid sent home for taking down the Mexican flag from his school? I wouldn't care if that flag was just there for Cinco de Mayo, but it certainly shouldn't be there all the time. Does anyone know the full story yet?

United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10

Patriotic Customs

§176. Respect for flag

* (d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

This code is the guide for all handling and display of the Stars and Stripes. It does not impose penalties for misuse of the United States Flag. That is left to the states and to the federal government for the District of Columbia. Each state has its own flag law.

I don't think the chicanos were upset due to Us code title 36. chapter 10, do you?

You do know the difference between wearing a T-shirt with a depiction of an American flag and actually tailoring a functional American flag as apparel?

If not, I'm about to get very insulting and condescending toward you.

He's wrong

the violation was that it was a restriction based on the day which is unreasonable. They were kicked out because the PC idiot was afraid it would upset Mexicans or those who see Mexican sovereignty as more important.

If there was a blanket restriction on wearing any flag at any time the idiot might have an argument. In this case he does not and should bef fired.

No. I think they were upset because they are ridiculous people.

This all seems like such a waste of time to me. I thought I might as well raise the point that wearing the flag used to be considered disrespectful anyway, especially as a pair of shorts as I understand "at least one" of the boys was doing.

Re: Should school kids be kicked off campus for t-shirts with the American flag on it

What we need here is school administrators ( why so many of these no-teachers ??) with balls and intelligence to know wrong from right.
Do they know??: when in Rome, do as the Romans do....
: when in America, speak English...
: anything?
