Why weren't they?

Failures of 3 count em 3 administrations to follow through with the 1994 contigency plan. It's almost damn criminal that we had the technology but failed to implement it in 16 years.

Ok... and... this means that the oil you saw -had- to come from a rig and -could not have- come from somwhere else... how?

I've caught plenty of globs around the oil rigs just not as much as the ship channels. What's the difference where the heck they came from? It's filthy crude oil.

I think we should have a poll voting on whether or not LiberalAvenger should immediately cease and desist from using any product made from petroleum products.;) You'll love living out in the woods, off the land. Farming is fun.:D

So, you cannot say for certain where the oil globs come from, you simply choose to blame the oil rigs. Good enough.

Wouldn't it be better to simply install the necessary safety gear this rig lacked so the preventable accident will be prevented next time, and thus restore access to safe and cheap oil?

Only when you know what if anything was missing from this rig, can you in all honesty pose such a ridiculous statement.
It is entirely possible that all safety equipment was on board, the blow out could and IMO possibly was caused by something other than faulty of not on board safety equipment.

I would not mind that a bit. A country boy can survive.:cowboy:

I would rather have higher prices than have these disasters every couple of years.

However, we should find ways to make it safer. Once it is as safe as drilling on land, then I'm on board (and some times even that is not safe).

Every couple years?
When was the last "one of these disasters"?

In order to have prevented all those oil spills, by not shipping it over water, by not drilling in or near water, we would be paying 3000+ dollars a barrel for oil. What do you propose to do about the massive worldwide economic meltdown that would occur should we decide to follow your policy proposal of higher energy prices and preventing all oil spills?

Look at the Manhattan Project. We could do it but the oil barons would lobby it to death.

Now that corporations are people they can do as they like and call it freedom.

I think this poll is bias as it states supporting off shore drilling means that you want to trash the Gulf Coast. I'm all for off shore drilling, but the proper precautions must be met. As it seems, the BP spill may very well be due to those regulations not being met.

You obviously missed my sarcasm.

No I do not really prefer massively high prices, I was trying to emphasize how we need more safety, but it failed on you. I apologize dearly a million times over.

It almost sounds like your saying that we must have oil spills.

I asked would you be willing to undergo the risk of off shore drilling in exchange for having another accident and ruining more of mother earth. What's wrong with that?

It's not bias, it's reality and the law of averages, not to mention murphy's law.

No one ever dreamed that the twin towers would be destroyed but it happened. Nobody thought we could beat the british in the revolutionary war but it happened. No one thought that alexander the great would be defeated in Afghanistan but it happened. No one believed at the time that the world was round but it was. Nobody ever dreamed that Toyotas were unsafe but they were. Nobody believed that there was ever going to be a black president but there is.

Just no excuse, none.

String em all up.

The problem with solar and wind is that you can't drive cars powered this way, and automobiles are the largest single user of oil resources in this country (last I read).

I'm all for clean and alternative, but it will not be less expensive, and it won't be more efficient. If we ever really truly go clean and green, regular people like you and me will have to accept a less luxurious and more sensible lifestyle. The problem with Americans is that we want to have everything, but we don't want to give up anything. I can. Can you?

You're right, Lizzie. And no, aside from oil, we are so behind the 8-ball when it comes to alternative solutions to power a car. Nothing so far as come close the the cheapness and versatility that is oil, that I am not sure we could EVER devise something that works as wonderfully. So far, nothing has come close.

And no doubt, as you have stated, we must change our ways and settle for less. For me, it's not a big deal. For others, much more of a challenge, even for the simple things like trading in their and SUV for a more fuel economical car. This is why I am okay with high gas prices. People only get sensible when they really feel it in their wallets.

Common sense, I agree.
But, this can be expensive and may not be totally effective....
Motorcyclists are forced to wear helmets, car drivers the harness, the off-shore oil drillers - full back up systems to prevent this from recurring... ..If this cannot be done, then no more drilling until a good system can be designed.

And yet, motorcyclists still crash and die, car drivers still crash and die, and oil back-up systems can fail.

Nothing designed by man will be fail-safe. I believe the systems in place were deemed adequate, and clearly no one anticipated a disaster of this scope. From what I understand what caused this incident is fairly common in off-shore drilling, and basically never results in this. From that, I would wager that we have already done as good a job as can realistically be hoped for in attempting to make this kind of operation safe.

While it is a tragedy, it is not, and should not, be the end of off-shore drilling, or of oil exploration or use in general.

Until someone has the technology to stop something from happening on this level. I would rather suffer high fuel prices and anything else for that matter.

We won't get lower prices from drilling anyway!

True. Our government has sunk billions of dollars into the search for alternatives since the late 70's (?), and nothing comes close. Electric? Uses electricity, pollutes more than gasoline, and is very limitied as far as distance goes. It's also not cost-effective for the consumer, because we pay the higher cost up front for the savings in fuel.

And no doubt, as you have stated, we must change our ways and settle for less. For me, it's not a big deal. I'm not really okay with high gas prices, but I think they are inevitable, and we are going to be caught with our pants down (again). But yes, I can change my ways, which are already fairly low-impact to begin with.

Most of the pro oil people are saying that "well, we only had one accident in 30 years" (which I believe is an outright lie).

Wouldn't it be a lot better and cheaper to seek safer energy sources?

There is no alternative to oil and all that is made from it.
