I thought they were talking about these.

The safety valve on the top pushes out the hotter the gas gets, so you might get a flaming jet but hardly any explosion.
I've seen some guys experiment with this, using a high power rifles, with no explosion.

Yes if you shoot a propane tank on its own it will not explode, and yes I'd imagine they were using bigger ones than me but the principle is the same.

In those photos I had lit a small fire and placed the propane tank inside of it, so when I punctured the tank with my rifle the gas would ignite from the fire. If there was no fire, there would be no explosion.

I think it's ridiculous to make speculative guesses without evidence. It leads to stupidity and panic.

If I'm not mistaken the tank you were using has no relief valve, so the gas expansion plus the restricted environment for the gas, causes the explosion.

That is difference between the two tanks.
If that were a regular LP tank, the gas would of already started leaking via the relief valve which would release pressure off the tank walls, preventing the explosion from happening.

BTW, our knowledge of explosives has put us on a terrorist watch list.

It still would have exploded if you did it with a lit fire. The value wouldn't start releasing the gas right away as the fire wouldnt have heated it up that fast, and once I had put a hole in it the release value would be meaningless because its all going out of the hole.

    That is true.
Needless to say, a propane tank is a poor explosive.
It's better to stick to hard compounds.

Public service announcement: don't use explosives, they are bad.

    I love Mythbusters.

I've seen some people do experiments with propane tanks, in chemistry related forums.
Fun stuff but dangerous if done stupidly.

I found the last two sentences in conjunction to be hilariously funny.
