I disagree with his philosophy, but I thought you would like him. :)

"The hardest part about gaining any new idea is sweeping out the false idea occupying that niche. As long as that niche is occupied, evidence and proof and logical demonstration get nowhere."

I'm slowly working on you.

(Just wait until you get into his thought about incest ... (Time Enough For Love))

Incest doesn't bother me, it's not for me but cousins on out aren't a big deal.
Now mothers/sons, fathers/daughters type of incest. :screwy

Good Luck. I used to be pretty libertarian before I grew up and saw the errors in it.

Just read the book.

What you trying to imply? :2razz:

Nothing. I just moved on to other authors. I think I start getting into Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind (another libertarian author) at that point.

Lately, I've been getting into Neil Gaiman. His book American Gods is just awesome.

I'm super picky about reading.
I mostly prefer philosophical works and nonfiction.

A fiction book has to well detailed and entertaining for me to read it.
I think the last fiction book I read and liked was a random Magic the Gathering book I found at the dollar store.
That was about 8 years ago.

I didn't say life is fair. I said US society was unfair - unfairer than many others. Get over it.

You just sound like a baby right now. Talking about US society being "unfair", as if any society ever was truly "fair".

What about the ugly man who will never know the loving touch of a beautiful woman? How will you make life "fair" for him? Or the scrawny nerd who will never know what it's like to have an enjoyable social life? Fair?

Fair is just a stupid ass word. Life isn't fair and society isn't fair. The US rocks, though...

I tend to flip back and forth between a good story and social science books.

Among my favorites are the Belgariad trilogy, the illuminati trilogy, the anansi boys, american gods, the sword of truth series, and the wheel of time series.

I bought what was supposed to be a great Jefferson biography but it's boring me to tears.
I can't help myself to finish it.

Now I've read all of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.
A very good read.

Technical manuals can be fun to read too.
Chemistry books and engineering theory.

No. I'm quite comfortably off now thank you, but I don't resent paying taxes to fund health care, education and public services to help those less fortunate than myself. ;)

Yea, as long as you don't have to get off your ass to actually do anything, everything is just peachy.

You transfer your moral obligation to the government and assuage your conscience by paying taxes and supporting Marxist redistribution of wealth.

Takes real courage to pay taxes and support government confiscation of wealth, doesn't it?

I tried to get into philosophy, but I am just not that into it. I have yet to find a philosophy that I cannot poke holes in, and its usually pretty easy to do. It makes me doubt how much truth can be obtained from that approach.

I personally think that philosophy was man's attempt at science before we figured out how to do it right.

I like a general "how to live" philosophy.
Confucius, Aurelius etc. are very good to read for that purpose.

I believe that I am quite capable of figuring that out for myself and that my insights are no better or worse than anyone else's. However, the reason I say that is because in the end, its my responsibility.

Truth.

I think I can finish this off with a Heinlein quote.

"Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded- here and there, now and then- are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck."

(Thanks to megaprogman.:2razz:)

Heinlein was a smart man, I have read about everything he ever wrote, but near the end of his life he started getting a bit obsessed with sex.
Now that I am older, I think I understand why....:2razz:

some is rich, and some is poor
that's the way the world is
but i don't believe in lying back
sayin' how bad your luck is

(Joe Strummer RIP)

I had me some bad luck, spent the first 18 years of my life in a bad situation.
Once I left home, tho, it seems that the bad luck vanished...
If you have a family that holds you back, move away from the family.....
far away.....

Some of it is reaffirming what I already know and other things are sometimes said in different ways that make it more clear.
It's also interesting to see what men of lofty positions really thought of themselves.

I do agree it is always your responsibility.

Nothing wrong with being grateful for what you have, and wanting others to have the same....or helping the unfortunate...
Our little town just had a fund raiser to help a single mom, a teacher, with lukemia. Haven't heard yet how much was raised, but it was a lot. Most people are generous to those who get smacked with truly bad luck.
Now, if she had been a crack abuser, it would have been a waste of time to do a fund raiser for her. Nobody would have shown up....

ah there's the parasite attitude. the wealthy should be pleased to have their wealth sucked away by people who do nothing to contribute to their wealth

from each according to their ability nonsense

That ain't how Bush jr. got to be president....:2razz:

nah, those tend to be thin on plot....and absolutely no suspense...

You cannot apply the unfolding of events in your life so to undermine another situation in the form of "laziness". Doing so makes you a disingenuous poster, and someone who does not deal in reality.
Disagreeing with me--does not make you right, just judgmental. You are no better than I am, so cool yer jets.
