white racism is waning. Black racism has become emboldened-this will cause things to change and will probably cause more white racism. However, over all racism has declined.

That one. ^

What about "America is becoming less racist"?

What about "America is becoming less racist"?

This. As a country, we are less racists than we have even been in our history from what I can see.

I would say that overall the country is less racist. However, since racism is no longer socially acceptable in polite society, they are now talking about things like "way of life" or "losing my country". However, they are mostly older and are a dying breed since their kids are less racist in each generation.

(I am not referring to the tea party)

You left out

America is becoming less and less racist. That's my choice.

That is why the poll is silly-ignoring such an obviously needed option

Because it is an easy out. It's true, but a general truth that does not preclude any of these options being untrue.

Depends on what you define as 'racist' really. Some of the same posters in this thread who say America is becoming 'less and less' racist are those who will swear that it is highly unlikely that Barack Obama got through university without Affirmative Action. Seems to me like the racism is now a lot more politically correct. Instead of saying 'a nigger would never get through school! come on! he's a nigger!' they now use the nigger's name. Overall I think that as far as 'Americans' go, most people between the ages of 35 and 50 today grew up and were raised with the same misconceptions about race that their parents had. Only now it is no longer seen as correct to express one's feelings about a particular race out in the open. They do it on forums instead.

We're probably less racist than ever, although of course the election of a Black President has prompted a great deal of panic and reactionary racism--that's just a relatively small hitch in the greater trend towards less racism.

That being said, racism is still the political prism through which many (most?) Americans filter their politics and views of the world. Race is everything in America. Of course it isn't actually, but it is in people's minds. Our schools and neighborhoods are not legally segregated, but for the most part, they are in fact. Capitalism, and American capitalism in particular is fueled by and dependent on racism and couldn't survive without it. Racism as an ideology has been imposed on all of us, and if we aren't actively and continually countering the capitalist/racism connect in our thoughts and actions, then it will tend to prevail.

Thus most people are racist as hell. Not their fault, it's systematically imposed.

White racism has declined significantly. Black racism is on the rise. Overall, I think it has declined. So my choice is America is becoming less and less racist, except somebody left this option off the poll. *shakes head*

This is primarily due to integration and in the case of whites, working with capable blacks. It is slowed by affirmative action, as often incapable blacks are promoted. Movies also have a lot to do with our perceptions and having more main actor roles played by quality actors who are black helps.

It is good to be an American.

My, how things have changed. Reverend Al Sharpton, for example was defending Bill O'Rielly on a news show last week.

Some Americans always seem to need some sort of group to hate. We've had the native americans, the african slaves, the commies, etc.

Now it seems that the hate faction (15%) hate the underclass (the poor, the sick, the "retarted", the unlucky people who were not born with a silver spoon, etc).

Code words like "welfare cadillac" are no longer pc. Now we have code words suchs as "personal responsibility".

I'd go that its significantly reduced over the past few decades, though getting slower in reduction as we hit a point of equillibrium. I agree with LiberalAvenger with the notion that human nature segregates us into groups for hate (I disagree with his one sided hyper partisan view though about the "poor" when you could easily argue the opposite happens from some in the poor to the "rich". Ask some people on this forum about Exxon or CEO's or people making over 250,000 or Wall Street people and tell me there's any less hate then you'll get from the opposite side).

Its one of those things where humans in some way are cliquish beings and in doing so will define some people as bad, some as good. Hell, look at a middle or high school and watch as the various classes of people from preps to jocks to geeks to goths to brains and on will all interact with various "group" views for each other.

I think, to a point, there is always going to be some racism or some "-ism" in the country, human nature just wants that segregation too much. However I think the more violent, more ingrained, more consious aspect of it has been becoming less and less wide spread over the years.

To put it another way, I think the slope of the amount of racism is relatively shallow, but going down, while the slope for how extreme the racism is has been much steeper in a down hill form.

I do think because its been reducing, and becoming less socially acceptable, you do find a smaller minority of those that still hold onto a more old style and amount of racism becoming more and more vocal as they feel threatened by the changes around them.

Yeah, Im going to join the list of bandwagon people who agree with TurtleDude here.

I wonder why the option for less racist was purposely left out?

I wonder why the option for less racist was purposely left out?

Honestly, I am not sure. However, it seems pretty obvious that this country is less racist than it was in the 60s.

I wonder why the option for less racist was purposely left out?

That's an easy one. It's because statisticians, unless they are objective and unbiased, pose statistical choices to achieve the outcomes they desire.

None of the above.

America, like most of the world, is becoming less and less racist.

Holy illogical leap Batman. How much assuming did you have to do to get this? Obama is a smart guy. He's a liar and a cheat as well, but he's smart and can get away with it. But you have to do some mighty fine stretching of reality to make it seem like those who think that America is well less racist now than in the past are somehow racist themselves.
