Are you OK with Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state of the United States?

What is this reason?

protection of the minority and equality among the states. (see the New Jersey Plan)

Oh, and not to break with the trend in this thread...

I was playing devil's advocate there, I was curious about your answer.

Anna Song. :2wave:

Most of the stuff she does is NSFW.
You are warned.

Now that her name was revealed, I am willing to bet that activity in this forum has decreased and activity on google has increased by an equal amount.

Too many more Democrats! Don't think so. Be like voting for a one party system if the states had a chose of voting for it. They already get all the benefits of being a state except voting. Tsk! Tsk!

Moderator's Warning:
Sorry to ruin the fun, but we are getting complaints from certain adult sites that, with this young lady's picture appearing here, they are receiving less traffic.

Or, in other words, back to the topic.

That's what it seems like.

Other than people who already vote Dem, there is no good reason for them to get voting representatives.

IN theory I have no problem with anybody with in reason becoming a state(s)
Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba etc.

The only problems I see is security. Always a concern protecting an island away from mainland

the other of course is, quality of life? Like how far a society is below ours and how much would it cost to bring them up to standards above the new taxes we collect from them?

But in general Im all for it.

Can anyone educate me on real serious CONS of the matter

What I said, two up.

Why or why not?

As an American, I don't really care all that much.

If I were a Puerto Rican, though, I would be vehemently against it, as it would mean the continental states would de facto decide who'd be my President rather than keeping such decisions local.

I'm not sure how much in new taxes we'll collect, considering the average income is around $17k a year.
It is a tax haven for businesses, how many of them will move to a new tax haven?
I don't know.

I imagine it will cost us more than any kind of benefit we would receive from incorporating them as a state.

17K A YEAR?
again since i admit I dont know about them what does that mean? Do they use our money is that their money, whats the exchange rate if there is one.

I do agree that most places we aquire would cost more initially but would it ever pan out? Ill always take a bigger population and there would have to be benifit for buisnesses with tax breaks and since it is a vacation/resort/cruise spot that would have to do something in tax dollars.

but either way im for it unless I learn something drastic thats a con.

They are a U.S. territory and they use U.S. dollars.

A good primer,

I think it is mostly a political ploy for additional Democrat votes, but that is just my opinion.

The most popular party in Puerto Rico is the Democrat party, if I'm not mistaken.

really?
you could be right by the way I "thought" they had a little different system at least three party but again one could always be dem because again I gotta "edumacated" on the subject :)

maybe ill do some reading tonight, thanks again

.... If Puerto Rico becomes a state.... do they still get to celebrate Puerto Rican Day Parade?

Can they keep the damn thing and we just treat them like the Irish on St. Pattys?

We really haven't been good historically. Read a book sometime on our little social experiments in Central America. The 1920s-1960s are the wet dreams of people who support aggressive foreign policy.

So you support "Downsize California Now"? They want a ballot initiative for a two-state solution. According to their plans, 13 counties on the coast, ranging from Los Angeles to Marin, just north of San Francisco, would be split off and be named Coastal California, West California or whatever they please.

Why split off the coast? What's the advantage here

How they vote should be irrelevant. If you decide to deny them representation based on the party they vote in, then that's setting a dangerous precedent. If they choose to vote in no one but Democrats, that's their right. I don't see you trying to remove Oklahoma's voting rights because they only vote Republican.

It happens all the time, why would this be different from any other?

I was responding to someone that wants California to have more Senators and the only way that is possible is to create two Californian States.

Home - Downsize California Now

Benefits of Splitting California into 2 States…

· Government will not grow faster than inflation/population

· More US Representatives and Senators working for our issues

· 3 month legislature; can’t pass too many laws

· Thousands of laws and regulations will come off the books

· NO State income tax for corporations or individuals

· NO State inheritance or capital gains tax

· Get rid of all duplications of services

· Voting districts by common sense

· All gas taxes for roads/highways ONLY!

· Budgets have to be on time and balanced

· More power generation

· Lower utility and gasoline prices…and many, many, more!

Don't care about established states, but we don't need another Democratic state. Might be too lopsided.
