Bartering Health Care

Could bartering for health care procedures actually work (even on a menial level)?

Well Im a A/V and computer nerd so mostly I could barter for menial things but why not? Why is it the governments business that I make a deal with my doctor that doesnt involve money.

Your doctor is not going to take your laptop as a down payment for back surgery.

We already barter. Don't pay your next hospital bill for 3 months, call the hospital to make a payment plan and a possible deduction in the bill. They'll usually take between 1/3 and 1/2 of said bill.

WHY is this? It's because the rates are highly inflated because they can charge a lot and the insurance companies will pay. Medical rates are too exorbitant to trade for these days. Paint your house? Come on, what's that worth? Perhaps X-rays and a CT scan.

A skilled individual could do it to some degree on a case-by-case basis, but it wouldn't be a long-term solution and would only work for those who have the right skills if they searched for doctors who required said skills.

In those instances it would be a trade of services.

Sweet link! Now where am I going to get 4,482 chickens for my bypass surgery?

Perhaps if you offer to house the chickens for him, than you can get a discount. If you hold enough accounts, you could become a bank! And if do it right, we could have fractional reserve chickening and the federal chicken coup reserve up in DC.

Its going to make mailing in your bill payments a PITA though.

I think for people with skills or items to trade, and doctors (or anyone else for that matter) willing to engage in bartering, it's a great idea. If someone can barter goods or services to decrease their out of pocket expenses, then more power to them.
