All this required was a basic attitude change, which seems to be impossible.

    No where.

None of those countries seems to be anymore appealing than a failing America - sorry.

You've never been to Belize, have you... ? Or the gorgeous tropics of southern India.

And Dominica... ahhhhh.... I haven't been yet, but I want to go so badly. If it's even HALF as beautiful as the images I've seen, articles I've read, and accounts told to me from previous visitors and inhabitants, then I know that's where I want to live out the rest of my days.

Re: If you had to flee America.

I like it here and have no plans to go elsewhere. There would have to be some pretty serious **** going down for me to "flee." If, say, mass anarchy were raging in the streets and it was spreading out to the woods (a decidedly unusual thing in and of itself), I'd probably just hunker down. I've got a gun and a garden and chickens. There's a big creek along the edge of my property. Food, water, roof. Do I really HAVE to leave?

Ok, if I HAVE to leave because mobs of crazy people are burning down the woods that surround me and killing everyone they come across, I'd pick Canada. Close, clean, modern, outstanding people, imminently reasonable government, tolerable weather, common language, medical coverage, decent beer, and bud. What more does a person need?

If you were uprooted from where you lived and moved there do you think it would *always* be vacation-appealing? Scenery is scenery - it's pretty to look at but life is lived in reality. How's the economy, weather, overall safety, political climate?

if I was to move elsewhere I'd want the place to be safe, balanced and where I can adequately support my family. Right now - I couldn't move anywhere even if I wanted. If I could afford to move to, say, New Zealand - how would we survive after arriving? Immigration takes time and money, it's never something you can do at the drop of a hat.

Perhaps I'm picking this apart with too much seriousness

Well, most places are relatively safe, even those popularly described as third world.

I plan on retiring in a 2nd or 3rd world nation.
The cost of living is just light years lower than the U.S. which allows me to retire early.
Immigration can be very easy if you have money to invest in the economy of the nation you're moving to.
Usually 50k is sufficient to get residency.
I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.

Mexico sure aint. . .ok, without being too technical.

I'd pick New Zealand - it's the sole provider for my firepoi supplies . . . it would be nice to have it available locally.

Yes. I never tire of looking at beautiful things.

Scenery is scenery - it's pretty to look at but life is lived in reality.
    Scenery IS reality.

How's the economy, weather, overall safety, political climate?
Economy in Dominica is incredibly poor, which is one of the appeals to me. Weather is perfect, except for high humidity. Overall safety is high. What political climate? (which is another appealing aspect)

if I was to move elsewhere I'd want the place to be safe, balanced and where I can adequately support my family. Right now - I couldn't move anywhere even if I wanted. For me, I have no family. I have no one to support buy myself. Dominica appeals to me because it is, for the most part, untouched wilderness. About as untouched as one can get in this day and age. I could live out my days there with a small garden and fishing to feed myself. All that would be required is an initial investment to purchase a place to live, and then a small stipend to pay for water and electricity. And then... peaceful, beautiful, uninterrupted bliss. Scuba dviing, hiking, swimming, gardening and fishing the rest of my days. No traffic, no noise, no crime, no politics, few people. Perfection.

Overall Mexico is a safe place, there some places that are dangerous but for the most part it's safe.
It's like certain areas of a city in the U.S. that no reasonable person would venture to.

Avoid the bad places and you largely have nothing to worry about.

New Zealand is slightly less expensive than the U.S. from what I understand.
