Well, without them we would live in a polluted cesspool with unhealthy food and drugs. Have you read The Jungle?

Please. You don't need the EPA for food safety. Afterall, even with the EPA we have scares. The reporting by Upton Sinclair would have been enough to put an end to the practices.

Any company that mucks up drugs or food and is found out will find instant losses. It is in a company's best interest to do well. The market regulates itself.

I was referring to the FDA for food safety and the EPA for the environment.

Sometimes the evils of companies aren't always brought to light. We should definitely have a federal organization that sets sanitation standards for food and drugs (which is what the FDA does).

Sorry, I was typing too quickly and wrote EPA instead of FDA. That wasn't really important to what I was writing, though.

So tell me this. If we had private certification agencies (such as UL), then wouldn't those without the certification see much lower potential than those with the certification?

It depends on what you mean when you say "libertarian". Would extreme libertarianism, the kind that the Libertarian Party currently advocates, work in today's world? Definately not. They fail to recognize the that the market can fail at times, certain things do have externality costs that really only government regulation can account for, and people with our inherent selfishness are always going to try and corrupt the "system" (be it the free market, politics, or whatever) to create an unfair, injust advantage for themselves.

But would it work if the libertarian party that simply emphasized that government's first and primary job is secure and guarantee our personal liberty and national sovereignty and use government only to either ensure the preservation of a true free market or to answer specific market failures? I think so. Moderate, intelligent libertarianism would certainly work in today's world.

Extremism, of any political persuasion, never works beyond the paper it is written on.

Hmmm.... So there could be, like........ let's see what would you call it............ dare I say the phrase......... Moderate Libertarianism?

Wow, I think the Earth just shook... like, Thus Spoke Zarathrusa should be playing the background or something....moderate libertarianism...

:allhail

I'd call the Libertarian Party moderate libertarians. They make so many concessions like tax credits for charity.

The way I read it, the majority is what ended Jim Crow and what is likely to end the recent laws against gays in Uganda.

Yep, not perfect, but a pretty good system.

Uhhh...Jim Crow was ended by court intervention declaring such laws to be unconstitutional.

And how long should gays be jailed and oppressed in Uganda before the majority changes their mind?

I think you might be thinking of George Phillies.

Right, right, because we have seen how this works lately:

There have been no e coli outbreaks since the lessening of regulations on the meat industry;

Corporate monopolies propped up by the state.

The economy has been doing great since so many regulations were removed from Wall Street;

Corporate monopolies propped up by the state.

There have been no oil spills since the oil companies have been allowed to drill without oversight;

Corporate monopolies propped up by the state.

There have been no mine disasters since regulations have been lessened...

Corporate monopolies propped up by the state.

Why, the free market solves everything!

What free market?
