Slain Cops Wives Drop Lawsuit

Were these wives right to bring a lawsuit?

I think when these officers were killed it made news at DP. There was a huge outpouring of support for the police in our community and these families, specifically.

I was pretty disappointed when I heard these wives were bringing a lawsuit against the county for failing to prevent the deaths by not monitoring the inmate telephone calls.

It seems the families have changed their minds and are dropping their claim.

What do you think about it? Should they have started down this path.....why or why not?

Should they have dropped their claim or power up for a fight?

If inmates phone calls are supposed to be monitored and something happens as a result of the phone calls not being monitored then it shows negligence. Perhaps they need to cut down the number phones they have and how long an inmate can talk on a phone so it can be easier for them to monitor inmates calls. Inmates calls are monitored for various reasons such as safety, make sure inmates are not plotting an escape or trying to have someone hide evidence. Personally If think if those families are genuine about wanting a change in policy they should go through with the law suit and only drop if for an out of court settlement in the form of a satisfactory change of policy.

I believe the current policy is to record all calls but not all calls are monitored. They don't have the budget to pay someone listen to all the calls.

I'm trying to believe that the families were genuinely trying to bring around a policy change and that $$ had nothing to do with it but.....
I don't know.
The problem I have is that they should have tried other avenues first. Those cops getting killed was a big deal around here. They could have gotten on local news easily if they weren't getting anywhere with county/city officials.
 
I agree with james insofar that, if negligence played a part in a wrongful death, it should be a basis for a lawsuit.

Outside of that, they should not be allowed to sue. That position carries an innate risk that is understood upon employment, and simple acknowledgement essentially indicates a waiver. It's what you can expect from policemen, firemen, stewardesses, and any position that can be placed in inherent danger.
 
I'm undecided. I don't know what their motives are and I'm not sure what the best way to instigate change. As a rule I think people sue too much.
