Okay so I have HSV1, was born with it. Got medication and the whole deal. You say I can spread it by kissing or transmit HSV2 through oral sex?
What if I show absolutely no symptoms? There are months of dormancy in between outbreaks. And believe me, I know when I have a cold sore - it's painful.
No.
It's possible, but rare, to get HSV1 on your genitals.
You should avoid performing oral sex on others while having an active outbreak of HSV1.
You should also avoid touching your cold sore, then touching your genitals.
Always wash your hands after touching a cold sore, applying medicine to it, whatever.
Rarely, you could also spread it to your eyes, causing serious problems, so that's another good reason to wash your hands a lot while having an active cold sore outbreak.
But HSV1 is not going to
turn into HSV2, or vice versa; they're two different strains.
It is possible to get HSV2 in your
throat from performing oral sex on someone who has that strain of the virus. Possible, but rare, one would think; I've never personally heard of a case of it.
I actually had a monstrous cold sore outbreak right before my wedding party; I posted a picture of it here, in the Tavern, at the time.
I totally didn't want to
go, but I didn't have a choice. My dad threw me a huge party, invited 200 people.
I was like, can I just wear a paper bag over my head? :doh
