It is remarkable to me how broad the political support for legalization is on this board. I seem to recall some "very conservative" members who were against it, but the center-right all the way over to far left seems to be in support. Am I wrong in my impression?

we are wasting too much money and freedom putting potheads in prison and confiscating their cars and property

if you get stoned and run your car into someone else you should pay the price

but sitting in your home listening to "Babylon by bus" and smoking a Marley?

no big deal

prohibition causes more problems then it solves

I don't smoke the stuff, don't drink booze, etc.

I support legalization for several reasons:
Constitutionality (lack of)
DrugWar->Police State
Booze=Weed
Legalized weed = Less $$ in hands of criminal organizations.

I voted yes in your poll. My reasons are outlined in a lot of other threads on DP addressing this issue. I hope that's acceptable, as my ass is dragging and i need sleep. :)

Edit to add: No, I don't smoke...

i'm far left and im against it, but i'm one in very few

I figure it's less harmful overall than alcohol abuse, plus potheads are a pretty laid back bunch.;)

I do not smoke Marijuana because I do not enjoy its effects on me. However, I do use alcohol, and do not believe Marijuana is any worse for people than alcohol, and may be better.

It is a waste of our money, liberty and energy for it to be illegal.

I've outline my position on supporting legalization on several threads. My position on this was actually developed here, at DP; I was staunchly anti-legalization prior to that.

Legalizing marijuana can, if regulated an managed efficiently and effectively be a great asset. Firstly, it will save a ton of money on the failed "War on Drugs". That money, along with the tax that should be placed on marijuana, should be used both for REAL education (none of the "weed is evil" or "weed is perfectly safe" stuff) and treatment rehab of those who are truly addicted. Beyond that, the de-criminalizing should reduce criminal activity associated with the black market sales and distribution.

WHOAAAAAAH DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!

I like... uhhh.... what was I gonna say...

oh yeah...

I like, TOOOTALLY support legalization, mAAAAAAAAAAn!

Like, YEAH MAN!

If you want to make yourself stupid, why should I stand in your way?

Wrong poster. :mrgreen:

Your right. I should have seen that it was not him due to the op directly asking about recreational pot and not tying to hide behind medicinal or industrial use.

I actually feel the same as CC on this. I was against legalization until I heard some arguments about it here, now I would just say that I want it tightly controlled, pretty much like cigarettes and alcohol, maybe even a little more.

I still feel that it should be okay for private businesses and certain jobs to do drug testing for marijuana. And it should be okay for them to fire employees if they have rules against marijuana usage. I know this isn't a popular argument, but I can understand some jobs, especially those that involve public safety or may pose safety risks to personnel, not wanting their employees to be getting high before work. Now, I will also say that it might be good for someone to come up with a breathalyzer test for marijuana, that could be used to test for marijuana use within a reasonable amount of time or a certain amount of THC in your system, kinda like the alcohol breathalyzers do. This could be very useful for those employers who don't want to intrude on what their employees do on their off time, as long as they aren't high at work.

I do think that smoking marijuana should be required to be under at least the same laws as smoking cigarettes, if not more stringent laws.

It should never have been made illegal in the first place.
