    Marijuana for recreational use

    It is remarkable to me how broad the political support for legalization is on this board. I seem to recall some "very conservative" members who were against it, but the center-right all the way over to far left seems to be in support. Am I wrong in my impression?

    we are wasting too much money and freedom putting potheads in prison and confiscating their cars and property

    if you get stoned and run your car into someone else you should pay the price

    but sitting in your home listening to "Babylon by bus" and smoking a Marley?

    no big deal

    prohibition causes more problems then it solves

    I don't smoke the stuff, don't drink booze, etc.

    I support legalization for several reasons:
    Constitutionality (lack of)
    DrugWar->Police State
    Booze=Weed
    Legalized weed = Less $$ in hands of criminal organizations.

    I voted yes in your poll. My reasons are outlined in a lot of other threads on DP addressing this issue. I hope that's acceptable, as my ass is dragging and i need sleep.

    Edit to add: No, I don't smoke...

    I figure it's less harmful overall than alcohol abuse, plus potheads are a pretty laid back bunch.

    Holy shit he finally came up with a straight poll asking if weed should be legalized for recreational use instead of trying to hide behind medicinal marijuana.
    "A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    I do not smoke Marijuana because I do not enjoy its effects on me. However, I do use alcohol, and do not believe Marijuana is any worse for people than alcohol, and may be better.

    It is a waste of our money, liberty and energy for it to be illegal.

    Re: Marijuana for recreational use

    I've outline my position on supporting legalization on several threads. My position on this was actually developed here, at DP; I was staunchly anti-legalization prior to that.

    Legalizing marijuana can, if regulated an managed efficiently and effectively be a great asset. Firstly, it will save a ton of money on the failed "War on Drugs". That money, along with the tax that should be placed on marijuana, should be used both for REAL education (none of the "weed is evil" or "weed is perfectly safe" stuff) and treatment rehab of those who are truly addicted. Beyond that, the de-criminalizing should reduce criminal activity associated with the black market sales and distribution.
