Do you keep a written journal or a blog of your life's activities?

If you do, why do you do it?

Not entirely.

I have tried to write about my childhood in small essays, but each time I find myself feeling silly about the exercise and give up some portion of the way through it.

Part of me knows that some things would be helpful for others, but then the other part of me wants to poke that guy and say "yeah, right!"

I think it would be interesting to write a journal and read it 40 years from now, just to help me remember the good ol' days.

But no, I don't keep a journal

I've kept one, more or less, since I was 14. I feel that the history of my life is important to me, and some day I want my friends and loved ones to be able to read it. It would also be a good ancestral piece for future generations if I have children.

I've kept one sporadically throughout my life, beginning at age 5.
That was when I got my beloved "manuscript book".
That's what I called it, because that's what I was told that it was called.
It was a big brown leather-bound book with blank white pages.
I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
I filled every page; it took me a couple of years.
My dad still has that book somewhere.

But yes, at various low points in my life, I have kept a daily written record of events.
When things are going well, just going along, I let it slide because I don't feel the need to do it.

I'm the same.

I have kept a dream journal for years, though I only rarely write in it; only when I get very trippy or interesting dreams. I analyze them later.

Don't judge me. :(

I am a man so no I do not have a diary/journal. Writing dairies/journals is something only chicks do..

i've tried sporadically over the years, never works out, self reflection ain't my strong point.

You cannot be serious, falling for such a foolish stereotype. Now, at age 70, I wish I had kept a journal(which men keep), the chicks keep a diary.........lol...).The problem is, it would have been lost, as would its replacement.... so the hell with it.:rofl

If you wish to act like a girl then that is your business, just do not try to hide in the closet by slapping another label on it. Not everyone falls for something just because someone slaps another label on it, look its not used is pre-owned, look its not gay marriages its civil unions/domestic partnerships, look its not a Bong for smoking weed its a water pipe for smoking tobacco.

My dad keeps a journal. He's not a chick.

I don't keep one now, but I used to, back in my late teens and early 20s. It was useful for helping me sort out my thoughts.

I also had a blog for a few years, until shortly after I became a dad. At that point I had to chuck a few things I didn't need so that I could have time and money for what I do need. Neither the blog nor my CoH subscription made the cut.

Are these the rantings of a two year old ??
Are you ever disturbed and does civility and respect mean anything to you? So ,off come the gloves.
Make no assumption about me, boy,as you are totally wrong.
As to journals or diaries, many well know men and women have maintained these during their lives - how do you think they write their autobiographies?
Or do you think?

I use a free software called Efficient Diary for my really personal thoughts, and I also have a blog that I put a variety of stuff on, from health info and political stuff, to music videos. I enter something in my personal diary on most days. I think it's interesting to go back and read even mundane stuff later.

That's awesome. I wish my Dad had kept one. It would have been something nice to remember Him by.

My grandfather, a poor farmboy and a real firebrand, kept a journal of all the women he dated in his youth. He evaluated each young lady based on intelligence, wit, appearance, and skill at dancing. He rounded each entry out with a letter grade overall.

My grandmother was the final entry in the book, and he gave her an "A+."

We found it after he passed away and we were cleaning out his house. My uncle found it first, and he blushed fire-engine red and tried to keep the rest of us from seeing it.

Real men sit on a comfortable chair and type away at the computer keyboard for hours on end with a box of Kleenix on hand in case he gets emotional.

Can you please stop turning this thread into your personal cause? No one cares about your gender stereotyping. I asked people if they kept a journal, and if they do then why.

I didn't ask jamesrage what it means to be a man. Seriously, stop trolling and go make another thread if it's so important to you.

My grandfather kept a journal of his experiences in the Pacific Theater in World War II that came to light after his death. It is a fascinating piece of work for us in the family, and it contains a lot of stuff he never spoke of even to my grandmother. I relied on it extensively for drafting his eulogy last summer.

Pioneers did it! Even if it was merely a 2 sentence or less account per day, they did it.

Too funny!

The best part was that my now-wife, who was my then-girlfriend, was the one who caught my uncle reading the thing. She was all, "Hey, Doug, what's that" and he tried to shush her and tell her it was nothing, which of course got everybody else's attention.

I don't consistently keep a journal, but have at various times of my life, particularly during periods of depression (the real deep dark type). The primary reason is because during those times, my perceptions are "abnormal" in the usual sense of the word, and it helps me get in touch with subconscious and/or problematic issues that I am dealing with. These times are also the primary creative periods that I have, so I write poetry. It helps me later have more understanding of myself. I do keep a dream journal, because I have many strange dreams, and it has helped me gain insight that I needed.
