As a former New Yorker and SUNY/Albany grad, I can tell you that New York failed largely because its corrupt politics. Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and Binghamton are reeling from being industrial towns (where Fortune 500 companies had major factories) that have not re-tooled. Yes, they had union factories, so you could blame unions (and their greed is at fault to a degree), but even non-union factories have packed up and moved abroad. These are Fortune 5 policies: big business (those that do not create jobs) in motion.

The malaise of upstate New York is really the fault of less than progressive politicians that did not recognize change and embrace it. On the other hand, Albany and the Hudson Valley has had a thriving tech/entrepreneurial community and has done reasonably well, as has New York City. They work with the same tax structure.

The New York State Legislature has been one of the most dysfunctional in America. It has been for the thirty years I have paid attention to it. Its dysfunction is institutional rather than party specific. What is scary is that Washington has, over the past 15 years of so, become almost as dysfunctional as Albany.

It won't kill it tomorrow, but it will kill it over time. The private sector (insurance component) is not a huge money maker compared to other industries. Their profit margin often runs at around 3%. If the health care bill mandates that insurance companies get rid of the pre-existing conditions requirements, they will be losing lots of money on people who wait until they have a major illness, then run and buy insurance to cover it. The insured will have put very little into the pot, but will get a large benefit. This will bleed over into the other customers' requirements by way of higher costs. Eventually, insurance will be a losing endeavor, and many of them could conceivably end up defunct.
Basically, the government is not addressing the root causes of high insurance rates, and the costs will go up and up for everyone, especially the taxpayer who is picking up the tab for the poor.

Maybe so. But last week's polls, indicate that, while most of the people polled are very unsatisfied with congress as a whole, the majority of those polled still prefer the next congress to be a democrat congress.

But, that was LAST week. Let's give it a month and check back.

And when the voters discover it didn't kill off the private sector economy and there are no death panels as forecast by the Republicans???

I hope Debate Politics archives all the "dem's are gonna die next election" posts.

And also add that "Avatar will be a bust" thread too, just for posterity.

    These know it all guys.

Is anyone enjoying this as much as I am?
