From a denuded discussion about the prank in NJ calling for all black people to leave, 1069 believes the black people in the store are poor victims, having to suffer the embarrassment of being black and picked on. I think they are amde of sterner stuff and have every right to be offended but are not victims. From that this poll. Please explain yourself...

****, I missed the poll. Ahh, found it.

I think making minorities (in this case Blacks) the "oppressed" or the "victimized" makes racism even more powerful. The more we talk about it, the bigger a problem it becomes. Like Swine Flu.

And then of course there's the notion that "racism" automatically means Whites victimizing Blacks.

I voted "neither".

But It's actually sort of both.

Some black persons (and, indeed, people in general), are victims (which ones these are depends on what you define a victim as).

And some are not.

As with all things, there are no absolutes.

Except that one.

Being offended does not make you a victim.

Somebody made a stupid racial joke using the Walmart PA. Big deal.

I hear black comedians on TV making jokes about stupid white people all the time. Apparently that isn't a problem... so, whatever. GTF over it.

Two completely different contexts.

There's definitely too much victimology in America today, and it gets tiresome. As for the poll, it seems biased and looking for a certain type of result.

Are you saying that as long as it is done for humor then racism is okay?

Did I say that? I don't think so.

If you are at a comedy club and the context of you being there is to be entertained and to told humorous things, then you KNOW that what you are hearing is being told in jest. Takes the bite right out of the racist aspect of the comment. Context.

Here's a specific example:

1) Comedian at a comedy club: "Ah... Jews... gotta love those money-grubbing bastards".

2) Politician discussing his constituency: "Ah... Jews... gotta love those money-grubbing bastards".

3) CaptainCourtesy demonstrating the difference of contexts at Debate Poltiics: "Ah... Jews... gotta love those money-grubbing bastards".

Do you see the difference in contexts?

I would agree with your assessment about the poll. I'm not completely sure what it is asking, so I haven't voted.

How about this joke, but you do not know who is saying it-

Hey did you hear that Halmark is making a Barack Obama Christmas ornament? Now everyone can hang a nigger from a tree.

Without context, impossible to determine.

Does race matter in who told it? For example a black guy telling this joke to a white guy or a group of white guys telling each other this joke?

This poll must be a spin off from the thread about the prank in Walmart, am I correct?

Come now, you know perfectly well that a white comedian at a comedy club telling that joke would be lucky if he were not lynched.

Contrariwise a black comedian can say things as bad or worse about a white politician and get away with it.

Just admit there's a double standard and move on.

Again, context is what matters. Race may or may not be one of the contextual components that can determine the outcome, but it is not the ONLY determinant, nor does it ALWAYS determine things.

I am NOT going to admit to something I do not agree with. So, no. I stand by my position. Context is what matters.

That thread had amazing endurability thanks to a couple of people, mainly.

They caught the kid, he was 16 years old.

These racial matters evoke quite a bit of emotion in some.

Would you tell the joke to a random black person(someone you do not know)?

Hey did you hear that Halmark is making a Barack Obama Christmas ornament? Now everyone can hang a nigger from a tree.
