No, it is actually the opinion of the people who wrote the Bill of Rights.

Funnily enough, those same guys had a lot of other ideas that I find just as crazy, so that's not about to sway me. Enough of them believed in slavery to keep it from even really being addressed in the Constitution. They also didn't believe that a woman was the equal of a man. Look, the foudning father's were some great thinkers and had great ideas, but we really can't use their 18th century mindset to judge every aspect of our 21st century society.

And for the record, I have never been the victim of a violent crime, but I have lost two friends to violent crime. They were both shot, by a perfectly legal gun.

You seem to be thinking I only want to take guns away from the "good" guys. I think we should do our best to keep guns away from anyone who isn't authorized to handle one.

The fact that there is still a government capable of tyranny and the fact that there is still a segment of society that is more than willing to victimize other people makes their mindset very relevant to today.

The gun is not the perpetrator of the crimes to which you refer; it is merely a catalyst in the hands of people with an ill intent.

Only the "good guys" obey the law, so the only people who would even think about handing over their firearms are the ones who respect the law to begin with.

The best way to keep firearms out of the hands of people disposed to possess bad intentions is to incarcerate those people.

Well, I'm not going to argue it anymore. You're free to think my opinion is insane, as it seems you do. But this is an ideological disagreement, you have no more hope of changing my opinion than I do of changing yours (not that that was ever my goal).

I don't think you quite grasp the concept of a message board ...

The only goal I had when posting in this thread was registering my opinion, not debating it. I know that this is an issue where protracted debate isn't going to accomplish anything. Of course I realize this is a debate board, but I can choose which issues I want to debate and which I don't. My registering my opinion and then not sticking around to debate it in no way hinders the quality of debate of the thread overall.

Surely you've been in arguments like this before? Where you get nowhere. Don't you find it tiring? I do.

Im guessing both of your friends were actually SHOT by a PERSON. Were those people of sufficient criminal intent that a knife or a bat might have done the same job? Or were your two friends gunned down by honest, hard working, law abiding citizens overwhelmed by their evil firearms? Come...there has to be more to the story...

When I was 14, a buddy of mine was shot dead. When I was 25, my best-friend-like-a-brother was murdered when his business was robbed.

I don't blame guns, I blame the scumbags that did the murdering.

It isn't rocket science. A weapon (any weapon) is harmless until someone with ill intentions and the will to carry them out picks it up... and bad guys get weapons when they want them, no matter what the law says.

Lock them up and keep them locked up. Do it the first time they show a lack of regard for human life (ie armed robbery).

You gave up after one post. Shows how much you're willing to subject your preconceived notions to scrutiny (very little).
