Are you married or single and have you ever collected welfare, food stamps, or Medicaid?

Thanks.

Also, please state your gender. :)

Married, and yes, I have.
I used to get both WIC and food stamps.
Until I got medical insurance about two years ago, I was a frequent user of the local free clinic, as well.

Also, please state your gender.

I'm an inny.

Married, male. No - never have. No welfare, no food stamps, no medicaid. I have some pride about that actually - I think I would consider it a failing or weakness if I did collect it which I know is a bit silly ... but that's just how I am.

You're an outie.

Single. I have received college payments from the Army and I have collected unemployment. That's it.

I'm female and haven't ever had to use government assistance. I don't down anyone who has found themselves in the position to have had to - but like Ockham, I think at this point in my life I'd have a very hard time applying for any assistance like this.

I do know a couple of people that seem to really milk the system and I just don't understand that. It doesn't seem to bother them on any level. Much like a neighbor I have who registers their vehicles using his mom's address in a state that doesn't assess property values. That kind of crap pisses me off. I pay property taxes, but yet they have no qualms working the system so they don't have to.

None of these, but I've gotten government assistance via stafford loans and tax credits for college tuition.

I was on food assistance for two years and I got reduced lunches at my kid's school for a few years as well.

I hated it, but I couldn't risk my kids going hungry.

Single, I drive on roads the government built, get protection from the police and fire department, I served in the military(and back then many service people depended on food stamps if they had families)...do I need to go on?

I was looking more specifically at the examples I listed in my first post - but thanks for your response.

I am a single male and I have received government assistance in the form of a pell grant and extra scholarship money from my state because of me and my families' low income. I also have a stafford loan.

Not as an adult no

Growing up yes

My mother collected UI for short periods of time and received Workers Compensation benifits for nearly all my life (my father fell off a roof the company he was working was resurfacing)

Workers Comp paid for my glass's and dental care

Government assistance is a broad category. If you really want to know about it, you have to talk about all of it.

Ive received assistance several times in paying off hospital bills I couldn't afford because I cant afford health insurance and dont qualify for Medical.

I dont feel especially bad about accepting the help, when I had a job I payed regular taxes and there's no way I could handle an emergency loan to cover a visit to the hospital on top of my current loans.

I got 2 Federal grants for college before I was married, does that count in the poll? It is government assistance.

Since I consider it such, I voted I am married and have received government assistance.

Male, got government assistance while married and after. Food stamps, housing assistance, Stanford Loans, Pell Grants, GI Bill, etc.

For the intention of this particular poll, I was only referring to those programs that are available to people who are without income or on a very limited income.

I've recieved assistance for a disabled family member.

I said no, because I haven't received any of the assistance described. However, I have received student loans and other school assistance. I am lucky to live in a society enlightened enough to know that it is a stronger force in the world with an educated populace.

I never depended on government assistance unless your count the free school lunch program at school when I was a child and my mother was sometimes on food stamps, wic and welfare.

We do count those.

He was a minor and therefore not responsible, his parents were the ones responsible in this case.

No. It does not count.

Oh, get over yourself, it's not like any of this matters. It's saturday night, drink a beer.

He was joking, Blackdog.
There's no shame in receiving assistance if you need it, so whether it was you or your mother and whether you were or were not "responsible for it" doesn't really matter. If it was your mother, you can dang well bet you were at least indirectly responsible for it, in any event.

Your tax dollars pay into the system, to help your fellow citizens through tough times.
When you're having a tough time, it's there for you.

If this thread is going to degenerate into some sort of group diatribe against those who receive assistance or have received it in the past, I'm going to present a severe impediment to that.
Fair warning.
