You are speaking for your personal experience. Not everyone is the same.

Whether or not you think they are grown up has nothing to do with it. If they mean it as a term of endearment, they mean it as a term of endearment. Your personal opinion of it has no bearing on that.

Lemme guess, you have a couple black friends, so you know. Am I close?

If I had a nickel for every forumite that said, "I got black friends, so don't tell me, I know", I could have retired by now.

I don't have to use the "I have a couple of black friends" line to prove that your personal experience doesn't bespeak of everyone else's personal experience. Just because you think people who use it as a term of endearment need to "grow up" doesn't change the fact that they are using it as a term of endearment, which already proves your assertion as incorrect. It's correct for you because that is your opinion and that's fine. Once again, you fail to understand the difference between fact and opinion.

Your personal, uninformed opinion doesn't make facts, either. Because, at the end of the day, that's all it is. No matter how much more you think you know than anyone else.

:doh

I'm not speaking from my personal experience and expressing it as fact. You've already acknowledged the possibility that some people use it as a term of endearment when you said that anyone who does so has some serious growing up to do. You've already proven yourself wrong. Seriously, how are you not comprehending this?

Truthfully, Patrick, I don't think there is any "good" use of this word, even when the intentions are friendly.

Which is your opinion, and that's fine. I respectfully disagree, simply because people are different and have different views of the word.

I just want to see how many people think that the "n word" is inherently a racist term, or if it is more complicated than that. I personally think that context is important regardless of what the offensive term is. I wouldn't consider a person racist for using the term regardless of the context. Context is incredibly important. What does everyone else think?

I voted no,...

However, I view the word itself to be racially loaded and so I do try to avoid using it.

Still,.. I have and I continue to use it when I get mad enough at someone. Oddly enough,.. nine times out of ten,.. that "someone" is something other than black.

I'm no more proud of using the word than I am of my temper. But the truth is the truth.

:3oops:

I agree that it's racially loaded. The word does have a very bad history and there's nothing that can be changed about that. Nothing will change the fact that people have and continue to use it in a racist/derogatory sense.

The only time I've ever used the term was to reference something that someone said, the title of something, etc.

No, regardless of context when a liberal democrat such as Robert C Byrd uses it, it is not racist. Never mind the fact that Byrd is the Senate's only Klansman, it's not racist when Byrd uses it. Never mind the fact that Byrd led the Democrats' filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it's not racist when Byrd uses it.

Democrats can't be racist, not even Democrats that spend two full decades listening, by personal choice, to a hate-mongering preacher condeming white folks.

No, it isn't. One doesn't have to be black to be a nigger. I know plenty of white niggers.

Not true......;)
It really only has one meaning, I fail to see why people can't seem to grasp that......

No, it doesn't express racial superiority of one race over black people.

Only its entire raison d'etre is to express the racial superiority of one race over another. I don't think the word "nigger" is offensive regardless of the context but I do find very uses for the word outside of a historical conversation. I don't even know why somebody would say the word outside of the history of the word itself. Does anybody know? Maybe in photographs depicting the use of the word historically? I wouldn't use the word talking about clocks or when I get McDs.

IMO Nigger is a racist pejorative, and Nigga is bothy an empowering term for a fellow black person, and/or non-racist term for a black person.

Personally, I find the latter term more disturbing when used by whites. Eww...

No, it doesn't. But deal with this. See you in two days.

Casting Samuel Jackson and Charley Murphy as two wiggers is the most brilliant move in cartoon history.

Any idea when they are going to have a 3rd season of that show?

I have no idea, sometimes words can take on new meanings and other times it may be a comedy bit.

I find a lot of times when people do use it negatively, they are just doing so in anger and not really meaning that they think they are racially superior to that person.

Its like how very conservative people (not politically, so I'm not talking about people here on DP) in general are with "sex" in society. Everything's gotta be protected, no mention of sex, keep your mouth shut, keep your pants zipped. That kind of nonsense.

The more we talk about how bad it is, the more we think about it, and thus the more we support its frequency of use.

I think this whole business has become a culture unto itself.
