    What an awesome movie.
like i said when the US does produce a good film the die hard in the box office and see limited bookings on screens. many people look down their noses at the art house cinemas and see them as a place for snobs. oh well.

Yes, and as everyone knows, the profit motive is limited to American theaters. Every other country eschews profit in order to pursue cinema as an art form - it's just us stupid Americans who don't appreciate film for its beauty.

(Nevermind that even if we assume that Cannes is the arbiter of quality cinema, the US has thoroughly dominated there as well.)
the creation of excellence on film is an art. two helicopter crashes and 55 killings in a blood bath does not a great film make. District 9 was mentioned here. my god how awful can a film be. this is nominated as a best picture. the film UP is also on the list. this is a child's film and there is a place for this type of film at the Oscars. it has no business being on that list.

Avatar is good film making. it is not a good film.

Avatar is good film making. it is not a good film.
And believe it or not, other people have different opinions about those things, hence the reason why they were nominated for Best Picture.

As a side note, if you thought that UP was solely a child's film, then I don't think you really understood the movie.

Those people are quite perceptive then.

it is shot in a child's format. there is a place for animated features. this is not the place.

    Star Trek wins.

Even if it wasn't nominated, it should win.

I'm surprised that you are so arbitrarily rigid.

I would have thought you had heard enough "just because I say so" sorts of arguments in your lifetime that you would avoid using them, yourself.

I have only seen Avatar, District 9 and Inglourious Basterds...

So for me the award goes to Inglourious Basterds, no doubt.

I've been searching for an all encompassing comparison, you nailed it. It's Disney's version of Pocahontas at that. The animation isn't even all that special. A very disappointing film experience.

Avatar was good, but what it did to the minds of those over at the Avatar forums is repulsive. Some of them are clinically depressed because there is no Pandora (I **** you not).
That's really sad given how truly un-original it is.
